    The Sirscrapalot Hurricane thread.

It's become a tradition for a hurricane thread when they come around...an I usually end up hijacking it...so..here ya go.

I'll be posting in it long as I can. Will put up some photos tomorrow. The during and after will have to come once i have power again, as I'm sure I'll be losing it at some point. LOL. Storm is supposed to hit for me sometime Friday evening/Sat morning, though we'll be seeing the tropical storm strength stuff prior to that, starting tomorrow night i think. My sandbar has been evacuated. Everyone that can leave is supposed to. Rest of us are here due to work, loved ones work(My reason), etc etc. We're also on our own. No 911, an no help to be expected til after. Price we pay for sticking around. Our choice.

Anyhow..stick around for photos, goats, quotes, and usual hijinks that ensue in a thread of my making.

To my fellow targets in the path of the hurricane...stay safe, good thoughts from me and the coolers to you.

An because I can..I shall Hijack my own thread with some storm music. Enjoy, an if not..mute it.

Sirscrapalot - Rock you like a hurricane.

Be safe of course, keep a couple of cold ones nearby too! Please forgive the bad gallows humor - You say you're staying put because of work... I think you want first grab at storm scrap! Seriously, do take care. My prayers are with you.

Good luck to you and those that plan to stay. Are you going to ride it out on the sand bar or move into your wifes place of work? Seems to me they probably have a storm shelter in such a place. Regardless if you see one of these it will be time to get out of Dodge.

Wanted to add this is a storm chaser vehicle that I saw during a tornado a few years back. I do not know why we are heading in the same direction, maybe I had a death wish.

Wife, dog and I are staying put. This house has been here in Jville since 1954 and seen many more storms than I. Sorry but I really hope the eye hits up the coast from us. As always, 73. Mike

    lol.

No offense is taken. Personally I'm hoping it turns to SC. No offense to South Carolina.

Figured you would be like myself, and stick around.

Good thing about older homes in mine and Mike's areas...you know their built sound if their still standing after all the crazy hurricanes and weather that has come to the NC coast.

Anyhow...I gotta go help put 200 flashlights together. lol. I knew there'd be a catch to staying here...

Sirscrapalot - Move to the beach they said, the weather is great they said...

    Thanks!

Far as gathering scrap...I know you speak in jest for others who may not know...in an event like this grabbing stuff off a curb can get you in a lot of trouble. Not so much prior to the storm, but defintely after one. People put out stuff for the insurance folks. So riding off with someones water heater, fridge, etc is usually not a good idea. Ton of people got in trouble in the last few for doing such. I tend to wait or speak with the people who have stuff out. Only way to be safe in this kind of situation.

DOn't worry though..once I'm able, I expect to be busy.

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway
    I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself
"This could be Heaven or this could be Hell"
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor
I thought I heard them say

    Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)
    Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year (Any time of year)
    You can find it here

Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes bends
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget

So I called up the Captain
    "Please bring me my wine."
He said, "We haven't had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine."
And still those voices are calling from far away
Wake you up in the middle of the night
    Just to hear them say

    Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)
    Such a lovely face
They livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise (what a nice surprise)
    Bring your alibis

    Mirrors on the ceiling
    The pink champagne on ice
And she said "We are all just prisoners here, of our own device"
    And in the master's chambers
    They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives
But they just can't kill the beast

    Last thing I remember
I was running for the door
I had to find the passage back to the place I was before
    "Relax," said the night man
    "We are programmed to receive
You can check-out any time you like
    But you can never leave!"
    Better than the dump!

Several random thoughts about the monster that is approaching...

    1) I pray for all my scrapping comrades in harms way.
    2) Another good storm song: REO Speedwagon- Ridin' the Storm Out (1981)
    3) The Washington Redskins play at home this Sunday. Wonder if the game might be postponed? Also, what about the Orioles and Nationals baseball teams?
    4) Totally random thought (perhaps for the next big storm)- there is a heavy duty cooler by a company called Rtic Products that is supposed to keep ice cold for up to 10 days. Thing of it as an Igloo on steroids. That would be something that might be good to have around if riding things out in hurricane territory or after a really bad power outage. I've never seen one in person, but they seem interesting (albeit quite expensive). Has anyone else seen or used one of these?

Oh yeah, another random thought. It appears that Florence, SC (about an hour inland from Myrtle Beach) could get hit really hard. So, yes, that means that Florence (the hurricane) could hit Florence (the city). Wouldn't that be strange?

I'm reading that Hurricane Hazel in 1954 was the only ever Category 4 hurricane to make landfall in NC. Florence went from Cat. 1 to Cat. 4 really quickly. The amateur meteorologist in me tells me that with the already rain-soaked ground in many areas, this is one storm where I'd probably decide to leave.

Stay safe down there. I just finished all my preparations and then rewarded myself by enjoying my hurricane snacks.

    Totally bats*it crazy here ....

I've been watching the natural signs here in Maine this year. It was a hot summer and the water temperatures here in the Gulf of Maine are near an all time high. The acorns are dropping off the Oak trees early and there's heavy cone growth on the evergreens.

It seems like there's a lot of solar energy stored up in the atmosphere that's gonna have to find a way of blowing itself off. It usually does that with wind and storms in the fall.

The last time i saw conditions like this was the year when hurricane Kat hit NOLA. I wasn't there, but it looked like entire communities were leveled to the ground from the news footage. Nothing was left standing in the hardest hit areas ? People disappeared and never seen or heard from again ?

My son and his family bugged out of Myrtle Beach yesterday and headed South to Georgia so i know they will be okay, but I'm concerned about everyone else that may end up in the cross hairs of this storm.
