The Sirscrapalot Hurricane thread.

Mike is getting far worse then I am. He's closer to Wilmington and the border, plus a tad further then my sandbar.

Otherwise...it's kinda wet. My little spot has weather bubble. Not a lot of rain as of yet. Whereas Kill Devil Hills north of me by about 7 miles got nailed with rain.

The sound has been sucked out. Which isn't good. When it comes rushing back in it's going to damage a lot of property.

We got luck an we're just grazed. Mike an folks south of me are getting beat like a rookie against Mike Tyson with no arms.

They've canceled the warning for me. Downgraded to a tropical storm warning.

Will be allowing locals back at 7am tomorrow, and everyone else on Sunday sometime.

Update. All is pretty good, still have electricity. Internet is down and I had to add to my cell plan data just to deal with ebay questions.

Lots of flooding in areas where winds drove water up rivers. The eye of the storm was centered 20 miles from here so basically it went over our heads.

The predictions of 1, 2 or even 3 foot of rain did not occur here. In fact we didn't have a lot of rain but I do expect more in the next couple of days.

Boy do the weather folks love a hurricane and love sending young reporters out to sand in water to tell us not to go out into the water.
Just lost electricity. **** and I was having a good hurricane. 73 for now I won't be back until the trons are flowing again. Mike

They did something similar one of our first hurricanes down here.

Walked past a first floor room, door was open, so you culd see the camera guy at the door to the balcony, and the report in front of him standing outside. You also saw the giant fan in front of the camera guy pointing on the reporter along with the fan with water sprayer attached. ;)

I lost a lot of respect for the Weather Channel, Al Roker, an field weather reporters cause of that one hurricane. If your going to fake the weather...what else are you going to fake? Al Roker was a jerk in real life when he was down here. Whoever said fat people are jolly clearly didn't send him a memo.

An on behalf of my sandbar...which makes me laugh everytime a hurricane comes through cause of the signs...We really don't like You Jim Cantori or however you spell your name. You sir are an asshat.

I remember when I lived in Panama City, FL and a hurricane was supposed to make a dead on hit with PC. Jim Cantori showed up and was all kinds of hysterical. Around there, if you saw Jim, you best be believing the hottest action was incoming. But, the storm at the last minute tracked a little further east and missed PC entirely. It made Jim so mad I remember seeing his rage on local TV where people whipped out cell phone cameras and videoed him raging all over the place. It was so funny. I'm sure some of you here might remember this and the name of the hurricane. :)

Was that Bonnie in 2004?

I was there in 2004 for Bonnie but I believe it turned and went east of Panama City. We were about 4 miles west of the old miracle strip amusement part and didn't see a drop of rain.

after affects are still being felt.

Ocracoke is shut down to all but property owners, and locals. Only way to reach Ocracoke currently is by taking a 2 hour detour via Swan's Quarter. As the ferry is shut down from my side to Ocracoke. Hatteras is open again but I think there is still restrictions down there. They had a dune get breached and about 3 miles worth of sand dumped on the only highway in.


Wilmington which nowhere near me got rocked. I hear there is no way in or out via vehicle. Fella we know who lives there is having to fly out to Norfolk, Va so him an his wife can go on vacation. They were supposed to leave this past weekend but it seems I40 and I95 are shut down in various places, and the airport in Wilmington where they were going to fly out of is flooded.

Far as myself....my part of the sandbar is doing ok minus some spots that are flooded. Nothing overly bothersome that I've herd about. Canals around me have started to over flow despite no rain. lol. Wind/tide thing or somesuch. The court next to me underwater as our the front lawns of most the people that live on that court, and the houses closes to it. I chose a good lot. No flooding..at all. /cheer I'd say about a good 3 to 6 inches of water in parts. Can drive it through it so not to bad. ;)

Otherwise life goes on.

Sirscrapalot - It's wet! - Ollie the weather man.

Just got the electric power back on and the web is again alive for me.

No huge damage for myself and the wife. Lots of the roof singles striped off and some ceiling damage from leaks. The siding from one end of the house was striped off(vinyl over asbestos siding singles). Some of the same vinyl siding on the front and back was striped by the wind.

None of the local radio stations are on the air. One I was able to listen to is over 100 miles away and mostly ignored my home city of Jacksonville, NC. No local reporters and not enough drama.

I expected far worse since we got the wall of the eye as it passed by(eye wall has the strongest winds). One gust was recored at 100 mph but 85 mph was the norm. I know one gust really rattled the house and got my full attention.

The big trees in the yard broke off several big limbs 8-10" at the base but landed in my neighbor's yard.

So now the fight with the insurance company begins.

Thanks for those who showed their concern for us in the path of the hurricane. My wife and I did well and its good to hear our Outerbanks pirate has survived to raid another cooler once more. 73, Mike

Glad you two made it through and with a minimum amount of damage. I got nothing on the insurance advice, but I do have an aunt who owns an agency(Franchise baby!) maybe she'll have some advice if I ask nicely. If so I'll be sure to pass it on.

73 -- Ham lingo for "best regards." Used on both phone and CW toward the end of a contact.



The first authentic use of 73 is in the publication The National Telegraph Review and Operators' Guide, first published in April 1857. At that time, 73 meant "My love to you!"



In the National Telegraph Convention, the numeral was changed to a friendly "word" between operators.



In 1859, the Western Union Company set up the standard "92 Code." A list of numerals from one to 92 was compiled to indicate a series of prepared phrases for use by the operators on the wires. Here, in the 92 Code, 73 changes to "accept my compliments," which was in keeping with the florid language of that era.



Over the years from 1859 to 1900, the many manuals of telegraphy show variations of this meaning. Dodge's The Telegraph Instructor shows it merely as "compliments." The Twentieth Century Manual of Railway and Commercial Telegraphy defines it two ways, one listing as "my compliments to you;" but in the glossary of abbreviations it is merely "compliments." Theodore A. Edison's Telegraphy Self-Taught shows a return to "accept my compliments." By 1908, however, a later edition of the Dodge Manual gives us today's definition of "best regards" with a backward look at the older meaning in another part of the work where it also lists it as "compliments."



"Best regards" has remained ever since as the "put-it-down-in-black-and-white" meaning of 73 but it has acquired overtones of much warmer meaning. Today, amateurs use it more in the manner that James Reid had intended that it be used --a "friendly word between operators."
