    Thank you

A very respected member of this forum asked another member why they could not offer a "thanks" for the valuable information they received from other members. That has been a concern of mine for a long time, but I did not speak up. So I will now speak my piece.

I have quit thanking certain members of the forum because they are to good for the rest of us. If I hold a door open for you and you do not say thank you, I am going to slam the door into your butt. Yes I have done this and also said your welcome when the door hit the target. Respect is a valuable asset. It is time to share it. We have a lot of knowledge on this forum, do not assume you are better than the rest.

You know who you are. Get off your a$$ and show your appreciation for the valuable contributions other members provide. Personally I would be embarrassed with no thank's because it means you believe you provided more to the forum than it provided you. If that is the case, you are one hell of a scrapper. You are better than myself because I need the forum to learn and I will continue to thank those that contribute. Just my 02 cents worth and I spoke my piece.

Give back more to this world than we take.

Well said Patriot76, as most of you know I'm retired from scrapping but still make contributions to this forum in the hopes of helping others from my mistakes and achievements. The majority of my posts do not warrant a reply as I'm speaking from an experience only I can relate to.

If it were not for the thanks given, I would feel that I was talking to a brick wall or to myself.

It is also a good idea when replying to a posters comment to use the quote, keeping the conversation in context. I recently asked a member making an un-quoted reply if he was directing the conversation to me, his reply was all.

Forums are like a party line where everyone gets a chance to listen in, please use the quote.

While I agree with both of you I'll bet that a lot of members don't know about the thanks button. It's like the reputation and report buttons that are next to the thanks button. If members haven't taken the time to familiarize themselves with the forum, they might not even know they are there. The same goes for the forum rules.

One important thing to know is that the thanks button is not available on the mobile app.

Very true, I tend to open this site in a web browser on my phone, and then request the desktop site as I feel more comfortable accessing the site in this way rather than the app. Perhaps the thanks could be added to the app so that those who only access via their smart phone can also thank helpful posts.

    With all due respect.
It's just the quantitative alternative to a text response..
In said thread, the thanks was a typed response and I felt it more than suited a positive attitude and respect for members who contributed on the subject.

I have to agree with NH. One of the other forums I frequent has a thanks option, but the first time I thanked someone (A frequent poster there), he got confused, wondering what the icon meant.

    Isn't technology wonderful?

Someone got Patriot riled up, bad someone!

I always figured...if I like a post, for whatever reason, I hit the thanks button. Can't do nothing but not reply if you don't like it..lol..which is probably a good thing.

Saying thanks, thank you or using this forum, by pressing the "Thanks" button is how a individual can offer a another person a courteous acknowledgement of appreciation. Saying "Thanks" also shows your respect of their active participation, by giving thanks you are giving back a acknowledgement to someone that have given their time and information to all for their benefit or consideration.

In 1965 Otis Redding and in 1967 Aretha Franklin both released a song called R.E.S.P.E.C.T., that song says it all, you can't just take, without giving back!

Just wanted to share why I went on a rampage with this post. On 1/26 I held the door open for three individuals and not one thanked me. All three were well to do and could hire someone to open doors for them. On this same day, I plowed out two neighbors that not only thanked me, but wanted to pay me for moving snow. I refused payment because they needed the money more than I did and both were handicapped. Because they had limited funds, both baked me treats for my efforts, more valuable in my mind than the money.

When I checked the forum that evening I saw that a highly respected member of the forum called someone on the lack of thanks. At this time I realized I have made lots of money because of information provided by the forum and felt guilty because I did not share the profits. At the same time I realized many individuals steel information for profit without even a thank you.

I am from the old school and expect immigrants to learn English and that my tax dollars should not be spent in education to hire interpreters. The least they can learn is how to say thank you for making their life better. I understand that the smart phone app has limitations, but if you can afford a smart phone, you can afford a computer.

So in a nut shell, I am disappointed that some of the Midwest has lost the traditional morals and values that were the basis of this country. I am sorry I took it out on an entire forum. So with that said, I will not back down from my beliefs, but I might quit posting them.

My wife and I go out at Christmas to do our last little things of shopping for the kids on one night. I too held the door for 3 people.. not 1 said "Thanks" or even acknowledged that I was there- it was as if the door was being held open by Casper. By the 3rd I was a bit peeved myself.. So I can relate!

I am glad I am not the only one. Did you hit any of them on target? I only got one out of three, but I am sure she will thank the next individual that goes out of their way to show respect. I wish I had a picture of her face when that door hit her and I said "your welcome". I am sure she had to change her underwear. Sometimes it is more fun when they do not thank you.

One of my sons has a smart phone but no computer so now he's on someones crap list because of his choice? Wow. All because someone didn't receive a thanks?

Yes, the button is nice but come on, am i supposed to ''thank'' every friggin OP and reply? Is someone counting how many times I've thanked others here? I didn't know this was a requirement or a contest.

ETA: And I would never hit someone with a door on purpose just because they didn't offer a thanks. If someone doesn't have good manners its not my job to teach them to them with brutality.

I am sorry I offended you in so many ways. Usually it only takes one of my opinions to upset someone. The post was remind people that respect is a valuable asset. I was taught respect was like a bank account, the more you deposit the more you can withdraw.

As far as a smart phone being a higher priority than a computer, I would not make that choice because of the monthly on going costs. At the same time if I was right 51% of the time I would be a millionaire.

Doors in public places have door closure limitations for safety reasons, so slamming a door is not a common event. Please remember I was an educator and most classroom doors did not have safety closures. It was my job to teach life lessons, if they were not taught at home. You would not believe how a school environment could change by doing this a couple of times. A big thing in society right now is anti bullying programs. I believe teaching respect would solve the problem in less time. When respect was not expected in schools I knew was time to get out of education. At least my scrap does not talk back.

NA, I apologize if I offended you. That was not the intent.

I think the more "connected" we are the less manors we have. The kids sit at the supper table and have a conversation via text message rather than engage the whole family. We are evolving into a society that can't communicate without a device.

People say things on the internet that they would never say to someone face to face. Cyber Bullying is rampant.

I am thankful I grew up before facebook and cameras in everyone's pocket at all times. We all did stupid stuff as kids. Now when a kid does something stupid it's all over facebook with a picture for all the world to see.

That's my rant on mannors/society for the day.

The other day I was on a beer run and opened the door for a woman, she replied "Mahalo" then came back outside to tell me that "Mahalo" was thank you in Hawaiian! I then said Adios...

At least she could speak English. That is a good thing. You knowing Spanish is also a good thing. That women deserved respect in my opinion because she shared her appreciation and explained what it meant in her native tongue.
