    Is it me or?

Okay well Is it me or are more new members are not making introductions. I know that I'm not the oldest member on here but wouldn't someone want to make an introduction to have people welcome them and introduce them to others? I thought that making an introduction to things was a must not to dive right in to the things. I mean I have seen new members who haven't made an introduction but yet they get their bums chewed out. Not meaning to sound like crabby pants.

I had to smile at the "crabby pants" Thanks I needed that.

I think that some of us, certainly it was me, are not familiar with how things work on forums. I am much more educated now that its been several years on this and other forums. So to me its now obvious that a introduction is appropriate.

Others who are new to forum may need the kind words of a wise young lady to lead them to doing the correct thing. Mike

Now go beat the copper out of something, Miked

You are welcome. Haha I am glad you laughed. lol

I wanted to sound nice and to inform the new members about the introduction but not be to rude about it. It would definitely help us other members to reply to some of their questions more and help seeing more background of the person.

It's been like that since I've been here and it's like that on every other forum I've ever been on. If the noobs would just read the Forum Rules and FAQ's, but some of them jump in and want answers NOW!

There are some members here that are very patient and still try to help and point them in the right direction. I would like to personally thank them.

Thank you. You know who you are.

That's what makes the SMF the best there is.

Some questions are better left unanswered....

Seriously, it's just an inside joke among a few of us.

When I first joined, I had no idea about forums, forum etiquette, expectations, or the rules. I had some farm machinery to scrap for a relative and my focus was on that, not the forum. Needless to say, my post had lots of questions and I got land blasted because a lot of the answers were in old posts. The research would have taken longer than the project. I was hurt and wanted nothing to do with this site after that experience.

As more projects came along, I did research on the site but did not interact. As new members joined I saw a pattern, most were like me with no knowledge of the forum or scrapping. They just had one project they were focused on. My demeanor for greeting new members is based on this experience. If they find value in the forum, they will become contributing members, if not maybe I helped make life easier for them.

Mechanics method of answering new members questions is the best. He posts links that answer their questions, something I have not learned. I would encourage all of us to remember, we were all newbies at one time, both to forums and scrapping. Treat new members the way you would want to be treated.

Now a question, how do I scrap a computer?
Give back more to this world than we take.

I agree with Patriot. I will not blast a new user for asking. If I can answer it then I will. If I can't then I move on lol. Guess it makes no difference to me if they introduce themselves or not. It feels overwhelming I'm sure trying to sort thru all the info, when sometimes and simple two sentence answer is most likely what they were looking for. YES I know someone will say, but when they ask this and they ask that. Always an exception. Those I ignore.

I think it depends on how they come to the forum. If they find it with an open curiosity in mind, they will usually read for a while and come to understand the way things work. It is those with a specific question that needs an answer that miss out on the real value here.

In some forums an introduction means that member will make that one post and never be seen again.

I always remember something that was told to me a long time ago. I had just been promoted to a division managers position, one week later the person who had promoted me, was fired. The new Vice President wanted to meet his managers. We are all setting around this large conference table, waiting to meet the new "Top Dog". He comes in, first thing apologized for being late, then says it's important we all know a little about each other! Gives us a quick intro of himself and his background. Then starts randomly asking one manager at a time to do the same. At this time I'm starting to realize just how young and inexperienced I really am. I had already been feeling the heat and the attitudes from most of this room full of veteran managers. These guys start telling about their 20 and 25+ years of aircraft expertise. I'm really starting to feel like crawling away and like I don't belong here!

The VP waits until I'm the last guy he calls upon, when he ask me to stand and introduce myself. I had only been with the company for four years, but had already been promoted three times. Still I only had 10 years of actual aircraft experience, nothing compared to my peers. I knew how hard I had worked to get there, so that's how I started my intro. When I was done, the VP said to me and the room. Your "Fresh Meet" and every organization needs fresh meet with new ideas, experiences, and questions the accepted norm. He goes on to say he wants more "Fresh Meet".

Here at SMF we need "Fresh Meet" too! Introductions are appropriate and needed, there is no best way to do it though. Intro's can be in a formal way or by demonstrating you want, desire and care to be part of something. The best way I know to be part of any group is to actively participate. Here that can be asking, answering and questioning, but most importantly wanting to be here!
