What type of lifestyle and/or job would you of picked hundreds of years ago?

I was posting on the bag lunch v.s. fast food thread and thought I would make a thread on the topic of what you might of did for work or what type of lifestyle you might of picked if you lived before they had all the waste and unwanted items that we have had within the last hundred years since the machine age of manufacturing.

I think I would of been a cook or maybe in transportation on dry land as I'm a land lover first. Wouldn't want to live on the sea or on the mountains or near them. I like area like we have in Minnesota with variety of landscape.

Maybe I would of been a lumberjack?

that's from Monty Python for those that didn't know. I really don't wear high heels, bras and such.

I have done a bit of farming helping out others for a wage or trade. I have worn many hats and I know how to do many things and with that I can figure out other things better.

I have always required vast variety in my Life as the thought of having a "Joe Job" or occupation that requires doing much the same day after day until they retire you with a alarm clock radio as a go away gift.

I do GREATLY enjoy the way that I live as there is so much varied variety at my disposal and use.

I have been outside today pulling some tall weeds and cutting tall grass with the old time tools. I like the work out and the QUIET of it. I do have the chainsaws and weed wackers and such, but I dislike the noise they make.

If i had to step back in time i would probably do the same thing that i'm doing now. Overall, it's not such a bad life. As a Master of a trade you enjoy a little more freedom and variety than someone doing the 9 - 5 thing everyday.

It would be harder though. When i started out as an apprentice we still did a lot of our finish cuts with a hand saw. It was important to have a connection with a good saw sharpening man that could custom cut a thirteen point fine. I've still got that old signed edition Henry Disston in the shop somewhere but i haven't used it in years.

Nowadays it's all power tools. The work isn't as hard on the body because the machine takes the beating and not you. Production is four times what it was and i'm able to work with a degree of accuracy that i would never have been able to attain back in the day.

It's really all a series of tradeoffs. The pace of life was slower back then but the standard work day for a tradesman was 10 - 12 hours a day/five days a week. Saturdays you worked at least half a day. You worked hard an died in your 50's or early 60's because you were all used up.

I kinda like the way things are today. You bang the job out and it leaves some leisure time to enjoy the other things life has to offer.

I would be a wizard.... and, I would turn anyone I wanted to into a newt.
