Computer Question: Why Doesn't the "Imbed" links in the "reply to thread" box appear?

Imbed links such as "insert a link" or "insert an image" etc, when I go to make a post/reply do not appear within the post box, it stays completely blank. I can make a post from within it, but sometimes must right click "reply" and load in it's own window. Also, the "top Stats" list from bottom the main page also stays blank, even if I open on it's own page, everything else on the page loads, but the list of current stats activity will not.

Anybody got any idea why it would not do this? What makes these programs work, could something be amiss on this computer? I can go to other computers and they work, just not on this one

It also moves awkwardly through posts/pages, such as when I click the like/thanks button, it doesn't add it seamlessly, and allow me to continue scrolling the thread, instead it reloads the entire page and bounces around awhile before coming to rest who knows where(especially if I've already tried to continue scrolling, which I usually have)

It might just be a brower issue. Try a different browser.

There's a couple things I can think of...

Something got changed in the code on the forum, and it's just affecting a small percentage of users.
Something got installed onto your computer (malicious or not) that is affecting how your browser reads web pages.

It's really hard to diagnose these types of things when not being able to use the computer yourself.

I appreciate it Ryan. I'm wondering what program actually makes those things work/appear/function. As in what/where to look for clues or reasons. I've had this happen before and if I remember correctly it eventually cleared up, but I don't know where to start looking for a cause or a cure

also, are these functions controlled totally within the forum, or is it something on the computer that makes, or allows, them to work?

These functions are a combination of the two. The forum code telling the browser what to display.

I don't mess around with this type of stuff much anymore, but I would start by looking at your extensions/plugins for your browser. You can go and disable them one by one and see if that helps.

It sounds like the javascript code isn't being executed correctly. This is different from the standalone java that is installed on your computer, however. They are totally different languages.

ryanw's post suggesting installing a different browser is probably the most painless work around. Checking/disabling the browser plug-ins is another good suggestion. Another thing to check would be anti-virus/spyware/malware scanners. A recent update or change in real-time malware scanning can cause some of the symptoms you describe.

To address the OP's question, generally speaking you should use the 'reply to thread' button to post pics, format your text, etc. As opposed to the quick reply box at the bottom.

Bear, that's strange. Because it's not happening to anybody else (or at least it hasn't been brought to our attention), it's probably an isolated issue. I remember we had to work through some other things a while back that were effecting you specifically. Sounds like software or browsers need to be updated on your end. This forum is HEAVILY customized, including lots of things you probably won't see elsewhere because I do alot of the coding myself, however most modifications do not contain or effect any functionality that I could imagine would cause the issues you're describing.

As far as the 'thanks' button and your page reloading, that's definitely not a forum side issue, and that's bizarre. The thanks button is actually 'ajax' based, meaning the action happens in real-time in the background and doesn't require the page to refresh/reload to display the new data.

Just out of curiosity, is your .NET framework, java, browsers etc all for the most part all up to date?

Welp, there went my hopes of it possibly being a simple click away and easy to fix. I'm almost certain it was working on this one up until about a few days ago, I've actually been hoping whatever it was would just fall back into place somehow, but it hasn't.
To do major updates I've got to take it up town and get on a faster connection, and I'm thinking when I did the initial windows updates on this one I left out the .NET framework ones, thinking I didn't need them. I just got done checking updates and looks like I need them all, including 1.1 and 3.5, over a hundred MB, so I'll have to take it up there and see if that'll fix it.
Thanks Admin, sorry this turned out not to be so simple
