    potential ebay sell headache

So, I have a HP Pavilion dv7 listed on ebay for $165. To my knowledge, the powerboard needs replacing which is about $20 or so, and working laptops of this kind, easily sell for $200+

So, I get this guy asking me how I know the powerboard is what it is wrong, and the most he pay is $130.

I tell him, and tell him that $165 to me is fair, and the lowest I would possibly go is $150 and explain why.

Then he comes back and asks if he buys it for $150, and it is something other than the powerboard, would I do a return?

Below, is my response....I am not sure if I want to leave him open to buy it, or block him and avoid a big possible headache.

I appreciate the offer, but when I cant verify something working 100%, is why I list the items as for parts or not working, so people dont expect to much from it, when buying the items.

I agree with you, that it may or may not be the powerboard. For all I know, it could even been the power cord that I used to test it with, might not have been the right voltage, and nothing be wrong with the laptop.

Only way I really do returns, is if the items arrive in a way other than what I ship them as. Like if during shipping a box fell on it and cracked the screen, etc.

This is why I describe the items best way possible and include pictures to document all damages, and list any known issues that I am familiar with, so people know exactly what they are getting, and there is no unexpected surprises. Most laptops, like cell phones, people buy them from me for their parts.

If it ends up not selling, it will just be shipped off in a pile of other laptops to an ewaste buyer.

My apologies if I come off as a jerk or anything. Not my intentions.

I have never had issues with selling laptops. I always list them as parts/not working, unless I know 100% for a fact it does work, and provide the cord with it. Never had no issues. Dont want one with this one either.

Anybody else, would most likely buy it, for the parts, and fix it or whatever.

If it's DOA it's DOA. You opened up a can of worms by basically making almost a warranty on it.

Even $130 seems high for a non working laptop, which I am guessing is a lot more than you could scrap it for?

Sounds like the buyer is asking legitimate questions, however you don't even KNOW what is really wrong with the laptop. He could very well be a pita if you follow through with this sale. Not sure how I'd deal with this one.

What warranty have I made? I have it listed as parts/not working. I make no claim that it does indeed work. I have stated in the ad, that I was told that it was the powerboard, but it could also be the powercord I used, or whatever. I give people as much info as I can to decide one way or the other, but listing an item as "parts/not working" gives no warranty that it does indeed work.

Take this for almost nothing but if working ones sell for $200. why would I pay 165 for something that does not work?? Usually broken junk goes for about half of working ones,

If its just the power board. Sounds like a good learning system. Fix it and get the full 200$. Laptops are a great way to wind down after a long day and a beer.

I do that with a lot of what I sell. Sometimes I get it, and sometimes I get an offer that I feel is worth while. I definitely wouldnt let it go for less than $150 though.

The only reason you haven't had an issue is because no one has pressed the issue YET. You can say it's for parts and non-working as many times as you want to reassure yourself that someone can't return it for a refund. But if someone wants a refund, they WILL get it.

When buyers seem like they will be a pain in the rear, they usually are. Just block them and be done with it.

I agree with saving yourself the headache. Some people make a full time job out of being a pain in the ***. My best advice, knowing that you are trying to be upfront and give as much information as possible, if its for parts or not working unless you know absolutely 100% positive whats wrong with it, dont bother saying anything. If it's for parts not working that title is self explanatory. If someone wants to gamble and bid on something that I cant verify the malady so be it. I had a high end mobo I sold that had some printer ink in the mem slots...Listed as parts not working...Someone gambled paid 30 bucks for it and they were rewarded when it worked.

If you have no idea what is wrong with it why are you saying it is probably the motherboard? Giving people the impression it is a cheap fix will bite you in the ass when they find out it is not. Sell it as part not working and let the buyer figure out what is wrong with it.

There are a couple kinds of people who buy newer broken laptops on ebay. Those that refurb them for a living and mostly swap parts with dead units they know what is wrong with them and those people who have no clue how to fix ANYTHING but are cheap and want to try it anyway (and they get pissed when they can't figure it out). The first type doesn't want to pay much but leaves you alone, the second type will bug the living hell out of you and might even want a refund.

First, block the bidder. Period. Then relist it starting at a much lower price and let the market run it's course. I am assuming you have no money into this.

Just my 2 cents on the matter.

I took out the part of the powerboard. I realize now, thanks to you guys, that I should never have included (never have included anything in the past).

I will let it run its course for the next few days. If it doesn't sell, I will relist it as an auction and let the buyers decide.

back in the 1960s the pundits predicted cell phones, computers, computerized newspapers, computerized shopping, and that one day people could use a computer to run their business while sitting on a beach.

one thing the pundits never predicted: that people would use computers as a channel for selling broken computers to people who actually want to buy broken computers

    anyway, I digress.

I sold it yesterday to a buy for $110. More than I expected to get for it, so I was happy.
