    Craig's List record?

This must be some kind of record. I got an upright old (1945) air compressor in the last estate cleanout. It needs a switch and I didn't want to fool with it so I put it on CL for $50 "as is". Sold in 14 minutes.

And I thought that motorcycle went fast at half an hour.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

thats a great turn around. i just picked up 4 electric chain hoists at the last auction i was at for 20 bucks a piece, threw them up on craigslist and within 20 minutes we had a guy that snatched them up at 95 a piece. we could have held out for more but cash in hand is better than waiting. that and i wanted the cash to grab more.

Cash in hand as quickly as possible. While you can possibly make more other ways in more time, fast cash in your posession is sometimes the safest route. Good for you.

old air compressor tanks are dangerous and best turned in for scrap.

over time any condensation that has sat at the bottom of the tank has started to rust out the shell.

tanks that get put back into service after sitting idle for years = a ticking timebomb.

in jersey air compressors are now regulated by the state boiler and pressure vessel division and are inspected on a yearly basis.
the inspection on older tanks involves both internal scoping as well as sanding down the lowest point to bare metal and checking thickness in several places with an ultrasonic type unit.

below is a link to some images of what can happen when a compressor tank lets loose under pressure

air compressor explosion - Google Search

an old tank can blow at any time without warning. best case senario is that it devlopes a hissing slow leak as a warning.

worst case is if it blows when you plug it in to test it.

i personally have sent 3 compressor tanks to the scrap yard after cutting a large hole in each tank.

    work safe out there.

The State requires this for compressors owned by individuals??

right now the state is only dealing with companies that fall under the codes and the pressure vessel part was just recently combined with the boiler inspection so its the same inspection every year.

as far as individuals the state is only called in when there has been an accident with a tank.

i am personally aware of 1 person in north jersey that lost part of 1 leg as well as a building and business being shut down due to an old compressor exploding while the guy was working on it.

    You sold that for nothing!

Mechanics and DIY guys covet old air compressors, "they dont make em like they used to"

Good for you though, you are happy and a buyer is happy. Its nice to give people deals on cool items.

I work on compressors every day. First off, only Industrial, commercial or companies with employees are included in the regulation by state, whether it is OSHA or the state boiler or pressure vessel inspectors. Independent company insurance companies usually have there staff make sure there is a "ASME" coded stamped tank and a Safety Valve (pop off valve) on all tanks.(In Minnesota, anyways).

If a tank is used at your house, you are on your own, not inspection. Age would not matter. Lots of compressors sold as portable won't have an "ASME" Tag/Stamp.
