Thumbs up boys will be boys...9 yr old at scrap yard

I don't think it matters where a boy is from, or what nationality he is. when they see big claws throwin cars around, piles of iron and steel the size of mountains, and machines crushin city buses their eyes just light up in awe. I mean, my son just loved it. He has been to a small warehouse type yard, but when he saw this one he says "Now this is a scrap yard!"He then asks the yardmen if he can have a go on the crane! And on the way out he says "Can this be our regular yard from now on?" gotta love it!

We have a large yard by me with a shredder. Nothing like watching a car go down the chute and come out little chunks of shinny metal. I could watch it all day.

Used to be, whenever they were putting up a big building, they would put a wooden fence around the area for safety. They would be digging out the basement/parking area with big earth movers and didn't want people falling in. But - they always put head-sized holes in the fence so you could look in and watch. Neat thing was, they put the holes at two different levels - one for the kids and one for the grown-up kids.

Guess they probably don't do that anymore for liability reasons Some of the older types on here might remember it though.

I take my 3 year old every time I go and he LOVES it.... he sings all the way there and cheers every time he sees that magnet or even a big semi unloading..... Twill definitely be memories I cherish! Also started taking my 14 year old cousin and he can't get enough of it either!

One of my happy days as a kid was when I was old enough to get out of the truck at the dump and toss stuff into the path of a Cat D4 and watch the piles of garbage get loaded. Still remarkable to this day was when we went down to the grain terminal and watched an operator pick up a rail road box car with a joystick and pour the grain out like it was a cereal box.

If you take your loaded semi full of grain to Decater Ind. they will lock it down and tilt the whole thing up on end to empty it, it doesn't matter if you have a dump bed or not. And you can ride in the cab while their dumping it. Kinda like this only better. Talk about an adrenalin rush.
