Went into the Navy right out of high school on the west coast. Went into Nuclear Sub School in Groton, CT in the winter of '69. Got orders to a diesel boat from WWII. I told them no way so I got shipped all the way back to the west coast. Still an E1 at the time. Got sent down to the engine room. Then we took our first tour to Viet Nam. Sometime during that trip I got chosen to be a mess cook. No cooking involved, just peeling potatoes and washing dishes. The head cook liked my work and made me a real cook. Great duty, did that for almost two years until a dream job opened up. I became the ships photographer. Did that till I got out. Did a total of three trips to Viet Nam and some secret trip to Korea. They wouldn't tell us what we did but gave us the Korean Medal the same as those guys who fought in 1950.

Got home and went into the CB reserves for another few years as one of the unit's photographers. I think I put in 6 years total. I did a few odd jobs during the reserve time. Then moved up to Washington state and became a deputy sheriff, and yes I was the county crime photographer. Spent most of my time 4 wheelin around the back roads in my county.

Here I am cyberdan, at yardsales I am dollardan

I read through every post on this thread as I was interested in seeing what others had to say on the subject and I figure that if people take the TIME to think and post and not just copy and paste that I should have the TIME to read what they have written about themselves and their adventures in Life.

I was active in the U.S. Army from 1976 - 1979. Inactive reserves for 3 years after that.

I went into the U.S. Army at 17 as I wanted to see other countries and such. I was looking for adventure and travel that wasn't available for me as I had already been to the lower 48 U.S. States. Never been to Alaska or Hawaii. Had a few peeks into Mexico and Canada.

I did my boot camp at Fort Dix N.J.

I found it interesting in Basic Training that VERY few were interested in going over seas. Most wanted to be stationed in their own back yards and such.

My training was at Fort Belvoir Virginia

I greatly enjoyed my visits to D.C. as I liked going to the Smithsonian as much as possible in my off duty time.

I spent 2 and a half years in Germany for the 8th Infantry division, Bad Kreuznach Germany. Then 3 years inactive reserves.

I ate some of the best brats and wiener schnitzel washed down with darn fine beer and wine on occasion.

I do miss the food and beer still to this day.

That reminds me. I picked up a case of Coors Light in the bottles yesterday and I keep forgetting that I "have nice cold beer" available out in my vehicle at the end of the driveway.

I should of went and got it when I was outside earlier.

No time like the present. Out to haul in my beer and make sure that they brewed it correctly by doing a bit of scientific research and taste testing.

No I'm not BIG on the drink. I drink mostly plain water and I like something different now and then. But when I do drink I prefer the better stuff.

I was standing inside the walk in cooler at the booze outlet and I was trying to decide what I would get. I knew that it had to be in bottles. I was looking at the Budweiser and at the Coors. The Bud was a little cheaper, but I have not been very pleased with the taste that it has lowered it's self down to. I still find the Coors tasty enough as long as it's cold.

I like the Fosters in the BIG cans and would mostly buy that in the past for having some beer on hand, but I went in one day last year and the price per can had went from $1.59 + tax to $2.59 + tax.and has stayed there.

So now that I have worked up a thirst, it's out to get me some beers and pretend that I'm in Germany waiting for the bratwurst & pommes frites delivery gal to stop by,lol...

I served in the US ARMY for a few years. I was a 31F (network system maintenance and repair). Basically I set up phone systems where ever the army needed one I also hocked up with the 31R who gave us satellite connection to other networks. I understand they combined these two MOS's now. I mainly stayed Stateside (Thankfully) and avoided hardship tours (don't know how I managed that one). I did do a few FTE's to other country's. My main post was Fort Lewis.

My only regrets to my service is I got out as soon as I could and didn't stay in.
