How to identify CPU heat sinks?

I was told that people successfully sell as parts on eBay aluminum CPU heat sinks. When I look at a hsink, I don';t see any markings of make/model/spec etc. How can I identify it, to make sure I can describe exactly what I am selling? I googled it but found no useful info.

    Thanks!

The best way I know how is to identify the processor the heat sink was removed from.

You have to take note what motherboard it came off of (type and model) and the kind of cpu that was there.

As some boards have dif size heat sink holder an or ways they connect to the cpu maybe diffident from board to board

An you need to know what kind of cpu. Some cpus put off more heat than others an so the cooling is based around the heating issue.

I find its not really worth listing on e-bay after you record all this info...list it..box it..ship it...paypal fees...ebay fees an you having to take there old heat sink back as they want the one you sent them for free.

(its sad but in the used computer market on e-bay there are a ton of scammers.)

Dumb question.... why would you need to replace a heat sink? Do they wear out?

I once sold a heatsink to a video card on eBay.. After all said and done with fees and listing etc, I think I made a little short of $5.
