Theres at least 3 piles of tires near me of 200 or more. One guy just had his yard cleaned up by the EPA and theyre the ones that left the pile! And its the largest pile too....

Determine never to be idle. No person will have occasion to complain of the want of time who never loses any. It is wonderful how much may be done if we are always doing.

I don't think it is against EPA regulations to give away free tires to be re-purposed.......I have seen in some places they are building houses out of old tires.........Oh well at least they are trying to re-purpose and not dumping them in the local rivers and streams (that we know of)........

Farmers around here occasionally use old tires to hold down the plastic covers on silage piles. I've never heard of the EPA cracking down on tire piles, didn't even know they get involved in local jurisdictional stuff. Maybe because we don't have many people in this state and I don't have such issues on my property or know people who do, so wouldn't have heard about it. I think the biggest issue with piles of old tires, besides being skeeters breeding grounds in the summer, although a natural duck slough is probably worse for producing mosquitoes, is if the tires catch on fire, its a big deal. So maybe there's fed laws on the books to keep tire piles low unless they are in an improved place that can handle them correct such as grinding them up.

I think it's the fire risk they get annoyed over.

Lots of places re-use tires for many things. Playground ground, playground equipment, build stuff around them, etc.

An of course on boats..as bumpers! Or whatever you call them to protect your boat from hitting the dock.

Craigslist is a funny place. When I have a bad day, I just go read their best of, or visit various cities/states an see the sillyness flow.

    Neat article alloy2!

A friend of mine did his master thesis on early West Nile outbreaks in South Dakota. It ended up that the skeeter that carried it at least here, breeds in low spots of grasslands. Sort of surprising results, counties that had a greater proportion of grasslands in them had more disease cases than the counties with lots of wetlands. I think a lot of people have become immune to W. Nile. If I had some extra cash, I'd have a blood titer drawn on me just to find for grins if I was immune. That would be second after going a dna draw on my dog to find out his other breed half.

I didn't mean it was the only concern. lol.

I got mosquitoes here...they don't come from tires tho. Same with those accursed black flies.

An of course I still stand by the reuse of them. When they are shredded an turned into a rubber mat for kids to play on, I don't their their quite the skeeter' magnet. Must not get to bad for the boats..an docks.

    Or others way their reused...

I'm more worried over the skeeters that birth in standing water, and other locations. thankfully..I don't live surrounded by piles of tires so really not a concern for me. They naturally occur here on my sandbar, we have no need to create additional ways for them to.

An honestly...I'm surrounded by water. All four sides. The black flies are worse. lol.

Agreed used tires can be re-purposed, a guy in Greendale used his backhoe to turn a tractor tire inside out then mounted it on a pair of drive rollers, loaded the tire to capacity to tumble parts he was making to de-bur the parts.

Would also make a great rock tumbler.

Leave the Feds out of this Tennessee has a disposal fee on tires if the tires are not being "disposed" of someone is pocketing the money and the the Tennessee department of environment and conservation might be interested.

it may all be completely legitimate but none of us here are informed enough to make that decision.

I agree and I am not being paid to investigate for the EPA........I'm sure if they were that interested they can get on CL and go look at the tires for themselves....

Craigslist - Has it's purpose, works out for many or it would have long since failed. I use it to hire entry level workers with very good results. I have used it to find "free" fill dirt, that has worked out only 2 or 3 times. People think just about anything can be used as "fill" dirt. What they want to "give" away, usually is waste construction materiel that they can't afford to pay to have properly disposed of or recycled. There is no "free lunch", free dirt or anything else! I have seen many CL adds giving something away for free, free dirt, free firewood, free trees, free bricks, free shrubs and even free sex. I read a lot of the adds with lots of laughter, CL is the "funny Papers" of these times. I still keep looking, calling and driving to take a look at the "freebies". We all want something for free, myself included, it almost never works out, but we keep trying!

I think free firewood is almost the most "Can you believe, that guy wanted it done for free'?, really living in a "dream world" as I have owned a full service landscape and construction company. My tree crews are some of my best "money makers", so they get paid by skill level. All most all of our tree waste is processed into firewood, mulch, or blended into custom top soils, a byproduct that is sold and is just one of many variables that makeup a "bid quote" to remove or trim a tree!

Every once in awhile we get a call to remove a tree or palm. On a very rare occasion, we are able to pay them for that "specimen" tree or palm. On those occasions we have a "buy" order for a commercial property desiring mature, will maintained and healthy plant. You could build a nice house for what a developer will pay for a specimen tree or palm. This is why I keep looking at CL adds for "free firewood".
