What Would You Ask For This?

I got my second industrial business pick up in a week Thursday and in the pile of ewaste that was left out for me was this:

I have no idea if it works or not and don't plan to test it anytime soon. If I was to sell it as a parts machine what would you ask for it? I checked Ebay and they range from $75-100 asking price. There is one sold listing for a similar one but I don't know about it because it sold for over $3000.00 and that just seems sketchy.

I would plug a power cord into it, and see if there are signs of life. If so, I'd try to get the $75 out of it. If not, I think $50 would be a reasonable figure (Please note- I use US dollars, not Canadian ones).

Thanks matador. Do you have any idea why one sold for $3300 on Ebay? It seems suspicious.

The only reason I see one going for that high would be if a company happened to need one desperately. The other option would be if it happened to be worth collecting for some reason (famous owner, first off the line, something like that). That number seems extremely sketchy considering I can get a brand new full rackmount server for less than that if I shopped around. As for how much I'd ask, probably $50-75 USD. All working Macs make a distinctive (varies by model family) sound at power up, like a booonnnggg on early Black & White Macs and more of a chord on newer Macs. They make the sound regardless of whether there's a monitor or keyboard connected. No bong/chord, no worky. If it makes a sound like a cartoon character getting hit with a hammer, then there's some failure and that's usually bad.

If it's not working, it could be as simple as a dislodged speaker wire or as bad as an exploded battery on the main board. If you get an old Mac, pull the battery out. On older machines it's a 1/2AA (half the length of a regular AA battery, 3.6V).

All Macs of that age need new capacitors. Those stinkin' SM electrolytic caps leak corrosive goo and eat traces and vias and pins out of the board.

But, if you plug it in and get a good bong, you can post that. That let's a buyer know it is in at least rudimentary working condition. Ebay offers the best prices, generally, but folks at 68kmla dot org forums love to play with, write about and give advice on old Mac stuff and are happy to save boards from scrapping to the best of their meager financial ability.

The machine in that year old photo looks very clean and that's worth more these days as the supply of old machines has shrunk and those that are left are in increasingly old and worn condition.
