Maximizing scrap air conditioning units !!SO CALLED SCRAP!!

Being located in South Florida air conditioning is a necessity not a luxury. We do quite a few units and some of them are in good shape.we started putting the units that looked good on the side, not being a a/c tech I got one of the tech,s that work for a customer to come at night and check them out.s good percentage of the units were fine,ok so why should I scrap them when I could sell them,we'll I put a ad on Craig's list used a/c,s the phone has not stopped ringing I sell at least one unit a day,on Saturday two or three,I sell the condensers for 250.00 2,3, and four ton the five ton,s 350.00(the five ton trans have aluminum coils) air handlers sell for 100.00-150.00 so I get about 3x the scrap value, they do take up some room but I can deal with it.electric condenser motors and compressors also sell well motors I sell for 35.00 and compressors 75.00-100.00 just thought I would pass this on.this can be done on a small or large scale.

I need a guy like you.. Here in Indiana.. My home unit is on its last leg.. I'd be a guy calling you for an upgrade!! Been working on an upgrade in my mind since I bought the house 8 years ago. You know it isn't good when the "Home Inspector" says "Whoa.. That unit is probably older than YOU!"
I'm so into scrapping.. When my Steel Toe Boots Wear out, I cut the Steel out of them and recycle the Toe!

How did you get into doing it? How do you get your leads on units? I have HVAC guys I know- One guy will only pull one if the homeowner demands it (He's so honest I was ready to sign papers on a new furnace.. he comes to the door with a toolbag and says- "I was up all night thinking.. I think your "A-Coil" may just be dirty.. I want to clean it and see" Next thing I know- clean- thing has been running at top performance since. The other HVAC guy I know pulls anything and everything he can get away with and installing new.. Long question is: How do you get these out of the hands of HVAC guys.. not being an HVAC guy myself! I don't have tools to pull freon :-(

You might watch for gov buildings being renovated, specially schools and learning centers. Sometimes the electrical or hvac sub will be required to remove the old units, and I've been on jobs like that where they were more than happy to give them to anybody willing to get it out of their way. I hauled 3 or 4 in the 17.5K BTU range home from one once, and when the job was over and I had time I advertised em one by one, never knew them things would sell so well. One guy wanted one so bad after he saw it running he tore the whole back end out a customized van so it would fit in there

haha, yeah, it was an ultra high effeciency unit, top of the line brand, even though I can't recall now the brand, or if it was 17'5K or 22. Almost like new. I had a 220V line outside, plugged it up so he could see it run, let it warm up on low, he asks if that was on high, after a bit I turned it to medium, he started really getting excited, asked if that was on high. I had told him earlier he could cool the whole neighborhood with it, and when I switched it over to high that thing was moving a LOT of cold air, and he couldn't get his 300 out or load that thing fast enough, haha

sledge 42, those are the kinds of techs you need to recommend to everyone. I wish the auto industry had more people like that!

1956, posts like these are encouraging me to get certified.
