I break down towers and have been just selling the power supplies to the local yard. I have no idea how to maximize and sell working power supplies, or even how to test them. Is there a previously posted thread for that? I have looked and can't find one.

The main thing I look at with power supplies is if they are basic power supplies they get scrapped. If I look at them and they look different (braided wire looms, extra fans, wild colors) look them up and see what they sell for new. Then I test them and possibly relist them. I could spend them time to relist everyone of them and make some extra money, but its not worth it to me. I dont have the room to store a lot of extra stuff. I keep a few spares and thats it.

Usually 400-450 and up will sell as used if you price them about half or less than new.

Yeah the more power output its got the better the price you can get as well. There are a ton of garage PC builders in Florida and nice power supplies are not dirt cheap.

You can get a cheap tester for them. Mine's a CoolMax brand, google coolmax tester and you'll see a list of them, I think I paid $10 or $12 for it, but that's been several years ago. The old AT PSs might stand a chance of selling too, or brands like Apple, DEC, IBM etc. for older computers/servers. Not only AT power supplies, any parts for those old boards, even the computer cases are getting harder to find, and the market for vintage stuff is growing too. I generally google motherboard numbers and parts I'm not already familiar with. SGI ( Silicon Graphics ) used to sell very well too, and was rather pricey, but I haven't tried any of it lately

I have also had good luck selling SATA power supplies, even the lower wattage, on craigslist...

The larger supplies I would target people who are gamers. They are usually looking for 600 watt one and up. Also try computer repair places to sell to or do a trade for their non- working stuff. I saw that mentioned on another thread.

The part of the computer that the power cable plugs into. It takes the 110v from the wall and transforms it into voltages that the computer can handle and splits the single power connection out to multiple power leads. It looks like a square box with a fan on one side and wires sticking out the other.

If you dont resell them to re-use, do you tear them down or do any E scrap buyers buy them per pound?

You can tear them down, you can talk to your scrap yars to get mtr price...and yes ewaste buyers buy them too. Go to buyers page,there are 3 or 4 buyers who come highly recommended by people on this forum.

I heard if you cut the wires off.. and scrap the rest into power board you can make some better money. then just to toss the whole thing into scrap pile for one price.
I get about 1000 to 1700lbs every two month.. and it just too time consuming..
Talk to your scrap buyer for a better price.

One thing that is often mentioned here in passing often is talking to your scrap buyer. That is very important! You are establishing a business relationship. Knowing what they expect or what you can expect from them is priceless in this business.
I know that I myself am not a mind reader, so to know what the person buying expects from me makes everyone's life easier.

Burly, watch for power supplies from dell business grade machines (optiplex mostly) as they seem to sell well on ebay, especially if they are from the small form factor.
