Yea, I'm giving life to an old topic but..eh, can't always be perfect. :P

    On securing your workspace...

For the windows I've not seen suggested Dark out Curtains. Hit up a local hotel for their old ones, and nobody will be peeping in on your loot! Tho I see the suggestion of the loud metal on the inside, if you combine the two it'd scare the crap out of anyone trying to get in..lol. Dark outs on the outside and your metal 'alarm' on behind it.

If you think someone is watching you while your working, just bring out the gun for a cleaning while sitting in your garage, on porch, etc. It'd make me think twice on asking you for sugar or milk.

Gotta watch out for the tweekers, they have no sense, same with crack/cocaine, etc abusers. Pot heads tho..really? what do you have to worry about from them? Stealing your chips and cookies? lol. Besides they'd be easy to find follow the orange fingerprints. Cheetos an Doritos built in finger dye!

Back on topic..I do most of my deconstruction in my downstairs workshop, and I solved part of my security issues with dark outs. The other, well see above. I also installed a better dead bolt on my door to my workshop.

Sirscrapalot - has a cooler, two dogs and a special surprise if you get past the dogs.

I'm a believer in the dog approach. People will be always able to steal something if they really plan to, but it's so useful to have a loyal barking alarm/deterrent system. Makes someone think twice, and perhaps find some quieter place to do their dirty deeds.

Havent been on SMF long, but the members seem to all want to help each other out. However….since the internet is open to anyone, there could be thieves who read this forum and even check out pics posted and are somehow able to gain enough info to help them steal? Same as Facebook info?? Scary thought. It's disheartening to know there are people who capitalize on honest scrappers hard work and dont care what hrs., even yrs went into harvesting the scrap.Must confess stories like these make me think differently about scrapping, even small time. Sorry this happened to you, stay at it be tenacious with the phone calls to scrap yards etc and pray you are successful in catching the thieves.

I have a secure storage yard-barbed wire fence, night vision cameras, alarmed fence, ect.

No trouble ever since I have been scrapping.

I actually made a successful insurance claim on some copper that was taken from my barn. Check your homeowner's policy.

My house is protected by reputation. My Father lives next door being that we have large tracts of family owned land. He has caught two people stealing on his property and they both lost teeth. Now people don't think about setting foot on the property without permission for fear of "That Crazy B******, Rob."

nobody in South Africa EVER INTENTIONALLY LEAVES ANYTHING VALUABLE OUTSIDE, EVER!
cos our crime rates are epic

and with the number of crackheads increasing here
we call it sugars & locals call it whoonga-but its basically the same thing

we have to ALWAYS be alert
hell, they even steal peoples pets & clothing from the line just to get money for drugs.

i do tend to leave the bigger stuff outside & even 3 nights ago, mt mother woke me up before 6- were coming out of winter so its still dark at that time
she said theres someone in the yard- interfering with my scrap

he stole a small radiator from one of the aircons i had but he left a good pair of sidecutters-
    thats the way it goes.

I had a wake up call 3 nights ago. Wednesday night, sometime between 2am and 4am (I only had time for a shower and food before I had to get back in my semi) I was awake in my house the whole time, but someone got into my pick up truck. I live on property on a dead end road and figured I could leave the truck unlocked and key in the ignition and not have to worry about it for 2 hours. I came back out to the truck and there were napkins everywhere.... I keep napkins In my center console, but I had a stack of about 10 important papers on the console and they were still there.. turns out someone stole my Oakley sunglasses. I got lucky that I didn't have any cash in there but I did have over 3000 dollars of tools from dewalt drills and sawzalls and wrenches, sockets, super size wire cutters, - just sooooo many tools, and none were touched. And the keys were in it and it is a fairly nice truck that was facing out the gate and the gate was open, that was my wake up call...

its just sh***y that you have to worry about things like that. I bust my tail for the little bit of stuff that I have, and that's mine. and, c'mon they stole a scratched up pair of sunglasses.
I cant stand a thief of any kind.

This tread is a good read. It puts into perspective on what scrappers have to deal with on a daily basis.

For the most part, my shred pile is “mostly” hidden from the road. Any PM is indoors out of sight. One dumpster find I did a bunch years back, a business upgraded there security system and tossed the small yard signs and the face plates to the key pads. They have a nice new home in my yard and on my wall next to the front door. A visible deterrent is worth a lot, whether or not it’s activated. They won’t take that chance.

I’m what most would call in the country, but still only 15 mins from the city. There are only two scrap yards in my area and they both keep good records of every transaction (photo id, signatures and vehicle photos). So its peace of mind if something were to happen, there are ways to follow up on it.

Protect your stuff. We worked hard for what we have.

Keep scrapping and Good Luck out there.
