crt! monitor disposal in charleston sc

To all the members,thank,s for all the great info.my local landfill will not take any crt monitors as of 7-1-11,from us big guys in the scrap buiseness ha ha i am a 1 man show ,disabled with 4 back and neck operations since 08, any way enough whinning about my problems.i would appreciate any info about proper disposal of monitor tubes.thank,s:confused:

Here in nj it's almost impossible to get rid of the CRT's, makes it impractical to even try to harvest monitors/tv's unless you can leave the tubes behind and just take the copper

This place is about an hour from me - I have an e-mail out to them asking if they take from the average joe and do they take less than a rail car full, lol. Will post if they answer back and also asked if they charge and how much.

The way they do the crt screens is this.

They use a "hot wire" around where the screen face an the tube meet an melt the joint so they can lift the tube off the face an then they will clean out the lead. After the lead is removed the face is clean glass.

Doing a setup for that is not really hard...but the EPA will LOVE you....

The lead is in the glass, the dust they vacuum out is something else.

Im wondering what that 'dust' is. Just white flakes that fly EVERYWHERE after busting one open. I've searched here and google relentlessly, cant find out any info.

I believe that is a phosphor coating.

Well that doesnt sound like somethin i should be breathin in...lol.

By me, I just strip out the insides, put the plastic back together with the glass, and put it to the curb.
