    DOT Physical with eye exam

Went in to get my DOT physical which I have to do annually now because I am crossing state lines. That's another story. (It costs a lot to cross state lines).
Anyway, the PA feels you up and whatnot, I always request a woman.
Pee test, then they do an eye exam. I can't see S*** in their little machine. Results come back 20/40. I pass this time, but if my vision gets any worse, I will flunk exam and no junk hauling for me.
So I figure I better go to the eye doctor and get some glasses. So yesterday is my eye appointment, go through with exam, 20/20 vision. Doc says 20/25 at worst, just get some readers for close up.

Moral of the story... I'm not sure, but eye exam cost me $75.

Over here in the bigger towns/cities they get $69.95 for 2 pair of glasses and a free eye exam. Hmmm

Pjpost are you required to test cause you haul junk? Are you running a 18 wheeler? I was only curious. We have to get a medical card here in Illinois if we run with a cdl license. I opted to declare driving in state. Need a lawyer next time to explain the options on all the decisions that need made for the crazy license.

@ focker I have to get a DOT physical every year because they say I am pre-diabetic. Which I think just means my blood sugar is too high.

@ kbob, it doesn't matter what you haul, junk or flowers. If you are a commercial hauler over 10,000lbs, you need USDOT numbers. Now that's in SD. In ND you don't need USDOT numbers. Also in SD you gotta have fire extinguisher, emergency triangles, annual inspection on truck, log book, yada yada, yada if you plan on crossing state lines. Oh, and don't forget your trip permit. You need a $15 permit going out and a $15 permit coming back. Now, if you are engaged in agriculture, you don't need any of those things.
I could be all wrong, but that's the way the trooper at the weigh station explained it to me while he was writing tickets, and giving me a full body cavity exam.

I purposely kept my rig, truck and trailer under 26,000 lbs., because over 26k, then it really gets ugly. IFTA, And whatnot.

And for some really good advise. Do what ever it takes to get yourself out of the pre-diabetes stage. Change you eating habbits see a doctor who specializes in dibetes(not cheap if you are not covered by insurance). In my experience the regular GP Dr's that I have seen in the past really are not great at diabetes or diet. The effort you put out today you will give you huge rewards in the future. I wish I had done the same years ago to prevent my problems. Mike

I hear ya miked. My mom has diabetes. She had a leg amputated just below the knee a couple years ago.
I have mine pretty well under control. Would help a bunch if I could lose 20lbs. Sucks tho cuz I love to eat and drink beer.

I voluntarily turned mine in this year even though i passed the eye exam. Things are getting out of hand with the complexity of the laws they're making. The woman behind the counter passed me a new form with all kinds of questions about the kind of driving that i was doing & whether it was local, long distance, in state, out of state, etc.

Thought to myself: I know where this is going.

I politely refused and requested that she downgrade the license.

I was able to control my mild diabetes with diet alone, had a little changes in what I ate and how often.

I wasn't directing my post to any of you with a CDL but to those thinking of getting one or new to having one. An yep, FMCSA and the other groups are really doing a number on the OTR drivers with CDLs, from the hours of service stuff to electric on board babysitters, talk of in cab facing cameras trained on the driver, etc etc.

Those things are worth their weight in gold if one ever decides to drive for a living. OTR, local, regional, hot shot, etc etc.

Hence my comment to protect it. Don't be stupid with it. Not paying a speeding ticket can cost you a suspension, fines, an a lot lot of crap from DOT, and DMV.

So yea..if you got one, guard that sucker. It's a money maker in its own unique way, an opens lots of doors to folks.

So remember..don't do dumb **** with your CDL, as it's always at risk.

This friendly reminder on protecting your CDL is brought you by me, obviously! If you thought someone else your in more need of help then even I could provide.

Sirscrapalot - Dislikes people who do stupid **** with a CDL.

Pjost, if thats the same exam we get when we do our license in NZ.
I always fail getting something right, then I say,

"Hell, I have been welding all day". They go "Uh", push a button and everything shifts and I pass the exam.

I get that and completely agree. Be a professional !

I first earned my CDL over 30 years ago. In all that time no problems, no accidents, not even a speeding ticket. I've seen a lot of changes over the years though. It went from being a Smokey and the Bandit kind of thing that REALLY did need more regulation to an industry that is vastly OVER regulated. At some point you've got to stand your ground and tell them to back off.

Heck ... i'm just a law abiding citizen. If it's come to a point that they're starting to piss people like me off they might be doing something wrong.

I wouldn't recommend going into this line of work. You won't be able to protect your CDL if they're making unreasonable demands.

Wait, IFTA doesn't come into play until 26000# gross? The state trooper I talked with (Wyoming) thought that it was for pretty much anything diesel. Does anybody know for sure? In a year or two, that could come into play for us!

I know I'm hijacking the rant, but what hassles have you all had to deal with in DOT numbers. My rig is EXACTLY 10,000 gross, so I luck out for now. But, the day is coming for a bigger truck. What nightmares are ahead of me?

if you want the correct details, an no offense to our resident Law Enforcement members...but go to the IFTA website, FSCMA, DOT, your state DMV, etc. They have all the info you need, from what weight ='s what, etc.

Yea I know state troopers are trained for this stuff as they can do a roadside/log inspection but it's their job to enforce the laws, not explain them.

Matador, you are in for lots of fun stuff. There is a lot of confusion over IFTA. I've asked troopers also, and got varying answers.

Here's what I grabbed off the NDDOT website. Printed it hi lighted it and carry it in my truck.

Alright- so keep it under 26000#, and we're good with IFTA.

The sad part was that I got a Lieutenant at the WYDOT office.

What other "fun stuff" do I have to look forwards to with DOT numbers?

    Thanks!
