    Another stupid law for MI:

MI House OKs metal theft bill after deal | WOODTV.com

This doesn't do anything to help the theft.

It only creates a middle man, someone who the theives sell to so he can bring them in.

There's no middleman. All they're changing is that you'll get paid by check mailed to you. I'd be ok with getting mailed a check. I get paid by check now for any sale over $50 (which is every one). No different than other contract work. You provide the service and get mailed a check in payment for services rendered.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

there will be middlemen. this law is to help deter theft.

People will continue to steal, but they will just sell it for a quick buck to the next guy, who will then likely break it down and sell to the yard and wait the couple days.

It is doing nothing to help the situation, just spread the money around.

This law does nothing to deter theft of scrap metal. What it does is make people who steal wait a few days for their money. The "paper trail" is already there when the yard scans your ID and takes your thumbprint.

laws like this are what pave the way for more and more regulation on every aspect of our lives. It is more than just scrap metal, look at the new regulations for sellers on ebay, or the states trying to enact laws requiring internet sales tax.

Eventually commerce will be so regulated that only the large corporations can survive. It is already happening in this country.

This was only put in place because Detroit is too screwed up to fix the problem. When im going through abandoned buildings, you can see the damage these scrappers do. Walls and ceilings blown out, all the wires and pipes on the inside are gone, whole rows of lockers gone, and they will still cut the pipes if the water is on. Thats always nice to come across. Some may have heard a story a while ago about scrappers completely tearing down a part of the Packard Plant using heavy machinery. If they can get away with that, they can get away with waiting a few days for their stolen scrap money to come in.

This is a picture of a Detroit school built in the 1920s. Scrappers cut the water lines in the middle of winter. The second and first floor had a couple inches of ice and the basement was completely full

Yep. Thats it exactly. I tend to avoid the city but i love my old buildings. Weve seen some pretty bad stuff though. water, freezing, holes in floors, fire damage, been inside a building while it was on fire. It just amazes me what some people will do for a little money or to just have "fun"
