motorcycle for sale without title... help plz

i found an 80's yamaha at a yard sale. they claim they have the title but can't find it. the bike is not running and would need major repair. if i bought it i would try and salvage some parts to sell on ebay and scrap the rest. they only want $25 and i think i could possibly make $200+ but don't know if i should get involved without the title.

thoughts? (location: Florida, if that helps.)

If your going to salvage and scrap or sell parts I wouldn't worry about a title. Selling the frame may require one. Did an old Kawasaki 125 a couple years back did not run. Sold almost everything but the frame and was ahead over 400.00 on a 50.00 investment. You should do well if you have the time and patience for eBay or Craig's List.

Have them write up a bill of sale with the bikes VIN and the sellers licence number.

In the state of Florida it is legal to remove property if you have verbal permission from the person in charge of the property this includes vehicles with out title, but to avoid problems get a bill of sale. selling parts is a grey area if it is discovered they are not the owners of said property and the true owner enters the picture. The police arrested me and raked me over the coals for 2 years in and out of court over 8 vehicles removed from Wallgreens drug store property at their request. fortunately I had copies of phone bills from their corporate office in Deerfield where they contacted me to remove the cars. GET A BILL OF SALE.

I have to agree with olddude. Always get a bill of sale. You don't need a title to sell parts but you never know who might come by and say you stold that bike. Cover your back side, if you know what I mean.

    ALWAYS CYA!

I have sold bikes older then 10 years old with no title as complete units for far greater then scrap value on both eBay and Craigs
I have also sold just parts and then the Bikes remains go into the next van heading to the squisher
