Hello! A few questions from a novice...

Salutations Scrapmetalforum! My name is Lawrence and I'm a poor college student seeking to make some extra bucks to invest in silver. I'm here because If I'm going to do this, I might as well do it intelligently...

My grandfather was obsessed with hunting and, to save money, created his own bullets. Our garage is littered with garbage bags of the stuff, but I'm not sure what kind of metals they're made of. Some I've identified as copper, but I'm unsure as to what the others are. They are bright silver, but that's as descriptive as I can get =.=.

Hopefully, with your help, I'll be able to lug some of these off and not get screwed over...

Find some local hunters that are into reloading, do not scrap it, slugs, and casings are worth far more than scrap to someone who reloads!

oh yeah, and if you have bags of it you'll be able to buy a few silver coins definitely
Determine never to be idle. No person will have occasion to complain of the want of time who never loses any. It is wonderful how much may be done if we are always doing.

I'm unsure as to what the others are. They are bright silver,

i'd make sure those ones are lead before selling them as that

The yellow ones are brass. The bright silver ones are nickel-plated brass. A few bullet cases are made from aluminum, and even fewer are made from a mild steel. But, if grandpa was reloading his own, he was using brass.

I almost forgot, a few were made from copper as well.

You'll also find lead (the actual bullet part that leaves the barrel of the gun). Chances are, grandpa was not jacketing his bullets in copper. Make sure the primer is out of the cartridge (although a few yards will take them). Be very careful though, you may find a live primer in an otherwise empty shell.

Expect dirty brass price if you decide to sell to a yard. You'll do better though by going to your local gun range and letting them know you have empties for sale.

Thanks for the replies! Waredu, what should I expect to get per pound of dirty brass? And I think we also have quite a large amount of red brass...?

The yard I go to gives $0.80/lb for dirty and $1.80/lb for clean. Best thing to do is call your yard and ask. Clean red brass should be somewhere between #2 copper and clean brass.
