Hello from Canada - First night scrapping

Hi,

My name is Steve, 31 years old, father of 2 children and I'm just getting into the scrapping game. Work is short so instead of working for someone I decided to start scrapping. It's always been compelling to me for some reason.. probably the desire to be alone and self sufficient.

I am starting with a 2009 Honda Odyssey (minivan), today was my first trip out. I got a broken 40 inch flat screen, a few bed frames and some small electronics. I already have some other stuff in my basement I am going to bring as well. Curious to see how much I get.

I am not sorting anything, just going to bring it in and sell it.



Any tips would be much appreciated.

Welcome to SMF and the freedom this lifestyle brings with it. Trying to feed a family in this type of market will be the first challenge. I admire your sink or swim strategy. It is assumed that you plan to haul materials with the mini-van and will fill the van until full or you drive by the local scrap yard. Therefore your van will become your workshop, office, and storage. Imagine your self as a minimalist and survivalist. I realize you do not want to sort materials, but I can assure you someday you will find a what-chu-call-it that matches the thing-a-ma-jig. Therefore tools and the ability to store them will become a priority. The types of tools can be found in the advanced search option above. I own many quality tool boxes but find myself using an old plastic five gallon bucket.

Your second challenge will be a mini-van for the family or dad's start up business. Soccer mom's lack a sense of humor when they have to use a scoop shovel to create room for passengers or groceries. This alone will create many opportunities to sleep in the dog house. Word of caution, a dog house is a low priority for scrappers. Good luck to you
