    Hello, new & no clue!

Hi there. Glad that I found this forum. I am totally new to the metal scrapping scene and hope to learn a lot here. My wife has access to roughly 50-100# of all sorts of wire containing copper. Every day I can get this amount and was considering an automatic stripper that will handle large to very small wires. Any tips or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. We live paycheck to paycheck working 4 jobs between us and thought this might help give us a little breathing room! Thank you very much.

Welcome to the forum. Save up material until you know more if you have the room to store it. Get educated for free. Read the old threads here on the forum. Search or just randomly choose threads to start reading since you are new every thread will teach you something.

At the bottom of each thread is a list of related threads which will lead you to more.

My personal experience with stripping wire with a wire stripper is it was not worth it to me. I could and did make far more money getting and processing more and different materials. Only you can decide where to better spend your time and that normally takes hands on experience. I do not recommend buying a wire stripper a time soon.

As for your personal financial I highly recommend Dave Ramsey. He does radio talk show and has a great web site with free pod cast type recordings of his radio shows. He does sell books and other stuff but his books are likely at your local library. He teaches the real way to get out of debt and save for your family's future. Combine your hard work with some real education. 73, Mike

PS I really do enjoy my paid off house. Mike

Now go beat the copper out of something, Miked

Welcome to SMF from the Dakota's. When you get set up this will be a nice supplement to your income. The forum has all kinds of threads discussing wire strippers from home made models to industrial machines. If you are handy at all, you might consider making your own and manually strip the wire until you have a good cushion for investing. You can move up to a drill powered homemade model and expand into the commercial machines. In the upper right hand corner of this post you will see a search box. I recommend you use the advanced search option. On the bottom of each thread you click on you will see similar threads. Good luck and welcome to our little community.

Mike D posted as I was writing this. I concur with the recommendation of Dave Ramsey and Financial Peace University. Another one to listen to is Clark Howard.

I would separate the types of wire as you get them. Then figure out prices. After that figure if it is worth it to strip or sell as is. Also if you get a large amount you may be able to get a better price. And make sure to call several yards to check prices...

Are you paying for it, or is it free?
How confident are you that it is a long term deal?

If you are paych3ck to paycheck, I would limit what I am spending on tools and equipment until I was confident I wanted to keep going and the supply was constant

Thanks for the advice. We aren't paying for it. My wife digs it out of the trash every day when she leaves work.

I would have to say your wife is quite the woman to work all day then drag #50-100lb of insulated wire from trash everyday........That is quite impressive and I congratulate your persistence!!!!!!!!!

I am definitely keeping her! She used to have a desk job she hated and started doing this where she is on her feet and lifting and moving boxes all night. Shes lost a bunch of weight and feels better now. She tells me she LOVES rummaging through the dumpster so its a win win for everyone! I just have to unload her vehicle when she gets home.. I think thats fair!!
