Hello from Jersey Girl

Hello everyone, I am new to this forum , Ready or not a little about me... I live in South Jersey & have 2 beautiful brave young girls. My user name holds a special place in my heart. Screwed on Tight(.webnode) is the name of a web sight my daughter created to raise awareness for a Medical condition my family battles daily. Unfortunately it is genetic both my girls (15 & 19) as well as myself all have it. My oldest has had 2 brain surgeries resulting in a cervical spinal fusion. She has metal screws & rods to hold her head up right , she is literally Screwed on Tight! It took me 3 LONG years to get a correct diagnosis for my daughter, was told repeatedly she was faking everything & symptomatically it was all in her head(At Least they got part of it right! Lol) I started scrapping metal about 6 yrs ago( Im getting better at it LOL) to help with the medical expenses, unable to work as my daughter became sicker, she needed round the clock care. We are extremely blessed & are thankful we found the most compassionate & caring Neurosurgeon & now know what we are battling. I will do whatever it takes(picking up other's trash) to get done what's needed. My girls are my Hero's. A little advice .. Stay true to who you are, Parents please listen to that "gut" felling & believe in your children advocate for them NO MATTER WHAT other's think. I know I'm sure glad I did. There is no cure for Chiari Malformation of the brain. & all of the "sister"conditions it comes with(Chiari doesn't like to play alone.)Surgery merely minimizes symptoms & helps to prevent permanent damage . My girls are doing normal teenage things now, we take full advantage of the good days & push through the bad. We always stick together & scrap together. Together we can do anything!!

Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear about your family's medical issues. I applaud you for doing what you need to do to get by and also for persisting through the skepticism.

There is a ton of great info here. Spend a couple of days reading through some of the old posts. You can search for areas that interest you and in the end it should help you learn to earn even more. Best wishes,

Welcome to the forum. You are doing the very best thing possible. The information in the old threads will introduce you to aspects of scraping you will not find anywhere else. Further you can get an in-depth education in each of those different areas. The more you read the more you can make. 73, Mike

Welcome to SMF from the Buffalo Commons. I am not familiar with the condition you are dealing with, but there is a bunch of good souls on this forum that will go beyond scrap metal to help any member. Keep reading and posting and you will be amazed at the responses you get. I admire your introduction, focus on life, and your desire to improve the quality of life for your daughters. Keep us posted and it is time to research Chiari Malformation of the brain. My prayers are with you as are those of several other members.

Thank you to everyone for the warm welcome & support, I apologize for not replying to each of you personally. A few things I am trying to learn more about.. Distinguishing the difference between cast aluminum & die cast aluminum. I have trouble seperaring the two.I know die cast is heavier. The other is scrapping cars. I have a 2001 Chevy S-10 extended cab w/aluminum wheels, alot of front end damage,power steering is gone,1 tire has slow leak it runs if i jump it paid $100 for it to help out a friend in need of some cash for Christmas. From my research it would cost to much fix than then truck is worth & I'm certain at the very least I can double my money just by scrapping the the thing as a whole. After joining this forum I'm now thinking that would be foolish & could make more $ by taking it apart? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you all so much. Hope your having scrappy day.

Your s-10 is worth about $ 150 around here as scrap. If you pull the radiator, wiring harnesses, alternator, etc. you could get $185 around here. If you parted it out you could get $500 around this part of the country over three years.

My strategy is to pull the frame and box and make a trailer out of it. Worth $300 - $500 dollars. Put on the market as a parts vehicle maybe worth $ 200 - $ 400 depending on the condition. Scrap the rest. Just another strategy.

Casting is a broad term that describes a variety of different methods; die casting is only one of these, although where aluminum is concerned it's one of the three most popular. Two other important approaches are called permanent mold casting and sand casting. While die casting delivers a high level of accuracy and a very consistent shape, sand casting is more versatile and is superior for objects with intricate patterns and designs. Perhaps you are associating the term die cast for Zinc which is more than twice the atomic weight of aluminum. Some yards may call Zinc Die Cast but that would be more of a slang term some don't separate the two and it all goes in the same bin. When you file test zinc it should be a dull grey.

Separate those items you are not sure of and ask questions, If you have a good yard they will teach you. Even to this day I some time have boards that I'm not sure if they would be considered a high end board and 9 out 10 times he adds them to the high end pile. I think that's because I'm not trying to sneak them in the bottom of the bucket. I just ask.

Very much appreciated, you are right about the zinc that is exactly what I am having a hard time with . The guys at my local yard are a huge help & have taught me a lot. Recently a friend started bringing me 5 gallon buckets full of locks from banks. His friend changes out the locks & is now saving them for me. When I took them to the yard on Sat, the guy told me the lock cases were not separated correctly that I could make more $ if I did. He said die cast is heavier bc it has more ingredients such as Zinc. & Cast is lighter & all aluminum. He tried to show me but I was a bit confused. They looked the same with exception of the weight. He said not to worry & he gave me the full price this time but to please try next time. I had quite a bit of different aluminum with that load. (Clip EXT,cans,Siding & cast.. My receipt doesn't say die cast on it I have to assume he put it under cast. Learning all the kinds of aluminum was a challenge & still can be for me at times. I got 3 more buckets today & want to make the boys proud next time I go. Thank you again, I am so grateful for your help.

Thanks Mike I appreciate the advice! When i asked the guys at my local yard about the truck I was told with aluminum wheels & original cat.converter they estimated around $225. The trailer idea is PERFECT!! I could put a trailer to good use around here. Another friend of a friend owns a small local body shop who has offered all his scaps to me if I can come once a week for the next 3 months. Currently I often have to borrow a trailer I would love to become fully functional on my own. Don't get me wrong I APPRECIATE ANY & ALL help I get. (I just hate to be that damzel in distress) I know how precious one's time can be. Thank you SOOOO much !! I'm excited to get this project started.

It is easy to build a pickup box trailer in half a day. They are easy to sell so I figure $ 400 for a days worth of work, half of it on my butt. Vehicles are hauled for winter work in the shop and this time of year is spent hauling and breaking, not building. Therefore in good weather it is volume and during the winter it is profit per load in my case.
