    Newbie For North Carolina USA

Just stopping in to say Hello to everyone. My daddy use to scrap things all the time being a welder by trade, he passed away on Aug 18th, 2014 and left behind what my mother calls HIS JUNK,,,LOL Only I know the real value of it all. Anyone near the Asheville or Boone area give me a yell as I am only 1 hour from you and could use some advice on metals before I take it to the yard the first time. I have got 10 buildings to dig threw and find stuff plus a old 65 model singlewide that I am going to scrap as the last project.

Welcome from the other side of the state. The very best advise I can give is take the time to read as many of the old threads as you can. The reason to read the old threads is because you don't know what you don't know. By reading the old threads you will be exposed to things you will run into going through those buildings. Without the knowledge from the old threads you may destroy value or waste time on things that should be hauled to the scrap yard. This will maximize your profits from your Dad's junk.

Sorry you lost your father, it is something we all must face in our lives. How we deal with such things reflects on our selves and can teach us more lessons. Funny how fathers can continue to give lessons even after they pass. Best of luck, Mike

I'd read all of the threads in Brasscatcher's signature.

Then, I'd just walk through there, and see what you can find. Write down makes, models, and details, and see what you have. Scrapping something should only be done if you can't make more money through a different avenue.

There are old threads on scraping mobile homes. What I got from the threads,in part, you do need to be paid to remove them because there is not enough scrap to cover the costs. Mike

Be careful some of the older mobile homes contain asbestos, also many of them used aluminum wiring but the plumbing can have copper and brass. Be sure to look through everything, when I cleaned up my grandmas place after my grandpa died I found a gun cleaning kit box when my grandma would go on a trip she would leave him a note with some cash he saved all the notes and all the money a little over $6,000. Also be on the lookout for loaded guns, I ran out of fingers and started to have to use my toes for all the ones my grandpa had stashed away under the bed, couch, furniture, in the shed buried under boxes and piles of stuff so be careful if you find any. Be safe have fun and hopefully you will find some good memories along the way.

Thanks everyone for the very useful advice and i am putting it to good use. Today was my first scrap run and I think we did something wrong. We stripped BARE BRIGHT WIRE all morning till we got a 5 gallon bucket full plus found 2 auto battieries to toss inn for a little extra we was so pleased but when we go there the dude said only worth #2 is that because my "Blonde" sister laid a peace on top to ? him about when we got there? it was a RED Copper Circle out of a TV.

Anyway we made 41.00 for today we really need a wire stripper we've got a HUGE spool YES FOLKS from the light company I know daddy had to get from big Randy YEARS ago it's about 3 CM around? HELP we hardly got anything done and we're both dead from trying....LOL

Welcome, try taking a sample un stripped and ask yard what they will pay. It may be worth it to you to sell as is. In the mean time take all the advice for above and put it to use.

That is called a tv yoke and the best bet would be to take a hammer to them and separate the wire from the plastic. There will be some heavy black stuff the wire is wrapped around and that is called ferrite, throw it in your steel bucket. The bigger clean wire should be #1 and the smaller fine stranded will be #2 along with the wire from the yokes. If the #1 and #2 is thrown together then most places will pay for the lesser size which is #2. Ussually #1 will be .10 - .15 higher.

If your doing TV's also don't forget the degaussing cable wrapped around the bottom of the tube and held by springs. Wrapped in black tape.
This might answer a few questions about them. TV's and monitors are real close to the same.

Some places pay better than others so you may want to call a few to find the best prices. I usually ask what #2 copper, brass, appliances, prepared steel prices are. Where I live the best paying yard is 2 1/2 hours away, and they pay almost double of what the closer yards do, so to me the drive is worth it, save a bit, take fewer but bigger loads if you can. The good yards will treat you well and be happy to answer any questions you might have.

Hey Connie, I live near Boone and work just about everywhere between there and Asheville: Banner Elk, Linville, Newland, Marion, Spruce Pine, Lenoir, and Burnsville. I've been scrapping for quite a while. The closest yard to you will probably be the one on 221 in Marion. Scrap yards can deliver a big roll off dumpster to you and pick it up. Let me know if you have any questions....Stephen

Also got another question...I know she's driving US crazy...ROFL I have a 1930 Ford Model A that i put up on local goups at facebook for sale I have 4 interested buyers so I know that's gonna sale BUT one of the buyer's asked what else we have and I told him TONS of 4X8' Sheets of Sheet Metal like u weld wood stoves out of that's actually what daddy taught me how to weld on when I was only 10 we built alot of stove in that ole garage. Daddy also has TONS of sheet tin for roofs. Will I get a better price for these selling the to this man that I will scrapping them? I know the type of sheet metal I have was worth 100 bucks a sheet i'd say i've got over 10 grand if I can get the 100 bucks a sheet for it. Tin I have no idea as to the price. Any advice appreciated

Definitely advertise it and sell it for what it is and not scrap. Any long pieces of angle, tubing, sheet, channel, or any other stock metal can be sold for much more than scrap. The economy isn't the best up in the Boone area, but I'm sure a welding or fabrication company would be glad to buy it for more than scrap. Try Craigslist. EBay would be a last resort....with a "pick up only" option for shipping. Good luck!!!

    Hey Connie,

First off ... i wanted to offer my condolences. It really makes one appreciate the value of life. Every day that we can spend with our loved ones is a precious gift. Probably best to be thankful for the time that we did have than to dwell on what was lost to us. Somehow we just have to pick ourselves up and carry on.

There's a pretty big difference in price between the used stuff (junk) that gets hauled off to the scrap yard and new stock.

This would be on the high end, but it gives you a rough idea of what people are paying for new metal. As a welder your dad probably kept a certain amount of "stock in trade". Professional grade tools that were meant to serve a lifetime of use have quite a bit of value too.

Anyhoo ..... for new metals prices: Metals Depot - Buy Metal Online! Steel, Aluminum, Stainless, Brass

Maybe check craigslist or ebay to see what a tool box full of Snap On brand mechanic's tools is selling for ?

edited to add: Maybe check out tin roofing prices at Home Depot. If what you have is new you might be able to sell it for more than 50% of the retail cost. If it's used and in good condition anywhere from 10 - 50 % of new might be a fair asking price ?

An old mobile home here in the north has some value if the steel framework underneath isn't rusted out. If you think about it ... there's a trailer hitch on the front, dual axles underneath, and a trailer framework already in place. They get re-purposed into flatbed trailers for hauling stuff over the road.

One thing to be careful of in N.C. is the underneath. It's a pretty good place for poisonous spiders & snakes to make a home.

    Hi Scrappah,

Thanks so much for the kind words about all we've lost it's been hard. 2nd I'll get a little personal here and tell a bit about my family my 25 year old son is "ON A ORANGE JUMPSUIT VACATION IF U WILL" because he chose a EVIL road of life with that being said my daddy 5 foot tall craftsman tool box has been stolen while daddy was in the hospital dying. It had all his Snapon as well as his MACKIE Tools in it so on that part i've got to start from scratch again.

Trust me when u have a son like mine in your family your not left with much and my daddy woreship the ground the child walked on no matter what he done my daddy died with 1 dollar in his pocket because of this fact and we use to be a sort of well to do family in our area now we're MUDD. Daddy taught ME to work hard for the goals I want and to NEVER give up while he peeked off 100's for Justin like they was candy. So now I might have to work with HIS JUNK but it's MY TURN and no drug attict around to stop me thank god cause he's in jail. Me and my little 80 year oold mother can finally have a car and remodel our houses a bit that they need desperately.

As far as the Moble homes go I have my 1965 behind my newer 1994 doublewide and I already knew about the low boys daddy wanted us to build one but then I had Justin So even mine still sits today piled full of junk and YES they are spider's and snakes all in my feild as I am sure they are where those one's I got to remove is located.

Thanks again for all and i'll keep everyone posted

    Connie C

Just wanted to let everyone know how today's meeting with the three gentleman went…..Did I sell anything? NO but did I learn a lot OH YES!!! My daddy's items are worth nothing but JUNK/SCRAP but they did tell me what each kinda car would bring and pointed out a lot of useful things I have just laying around. I do however have a 400 dollar offer on his set of Disks and his set of Plows for the tractor TOGETHER and remember my neighbor offered us 1,200 for just our tractor and even though it starts and runs they told me to call that man back and yank his arm off. Until next time….Connie C
