I am happy to introduce myself. I am Paljas. I am from South Africa and currently have 3 scrap metal yards.
My business is still very young and even though you may think I’m a big shot with 3 yards I can assure you it is not true (More on my 3 yards will be revealed later). I only started buying and selling scrap on a commercial scale in June 2014. Before that I was working in Iraq and Afghanistan and after returning to South Africa was basically jobless for about 2 years, making due of whatever loose jobs I could find.
I discovered the profitability of scrapping after I purchased several items at auctions, selling what was usable and scraping what was not. I must say, I wouldn’t mind getting my hands on some of those things that I sold during those days, knowing now the true value of it have it been stripped.
I met an old guy who owns a yard and he started teaching me how I should sort and clean. From there on I was hooked and was looking at a way of starting my own business.
Here in South Africa Scrap Metal is a BIG thing and there's a yard every couple of miles, especially in the bigger cities.
During the Apartheid era there was certain areas that was only designated for Black people to live and I decided to investigate the possibility for business in those areas. These areas are mostly poor areas with countless tons of scrap. With Crime being as high as it is in SA many white people would not dare doing business in those areas, but me, having had a tough few years decided that it is exactly where ill start. Needless to say it turned out very good for me and the people opened their arms for me and business is going really well.
This I am sure is enough background on me for now, I'll be posting more about my daily life, my loads, pains and pleasures in another post shortly.
