...I've employed many a drunken carpenter over the years. ...
Drunk employees are DESIREABLE to some places because IF they get hurt work-man's comp doesn't have to cover it.
(Many times first thing the hospital does is a breath/drug test, IF positive, NO compensation).

The best is "illegals" too because they have no rights. ...NO law suit even if they DIE.
Also good to rent rooms to because there's no need for "eviction" if the rent is late : "get out or I call Immagration".
Other than that section 8 is good renters too because the rent is gauranteed , but they generally bring cockroaches, filth.
    (I've moved many through a moving program...HORRIBLE stuff to touch...unbelieveable living conditions...lunch-time)...

These are just a few challenges average working Americans face trying to get employmeny/ rent.
...It DEFINATELY comes in handy I speak spanish fluently for working scrap. ...The ONLY people I see working employed daily many times only speak spanish, have no "papers" ...it lightens things up when I say, "Hola, Buenos Dias, Estoy buscando Acero, tienes un poco, O cables ???Gracias"

Well I work self-employed BECAUSE there is so few work, employers treat employees like CRAP compared to before.
Also I was sick and tired of working with folks who ONLY work there because there's no other work for them (heart's not with it) they complain ALL DAY and are dangerous to work around...it got annoying. ...[/rnt]

Well best of luck, business is BUSINESS...why should one be employed??? because they'll make money for the employer, and it will benefit themself as well. Cross that line, TIME TO GO! (I only want to know females, (my wife actually) ANY OTHER WAY than that. PERIOD)!

Nicely worded. Only problem is that you can sometimes get in trouble with the law if you hire illegals

The number of businesses that get in trouble is but a drop in the bucket, a majority of houses are built by illegals these days.

rush limbaugh, of all people, stated that minimum wage should be 50k a year. and he proved it by the use of cola and roi. even more amazing is how he proved that the increase in minimum wage would profitable to corporations, company's and the govt. soon after he lost his tv show and was sent back to radio.
I dont think that is what he is looking for. Perhaps he should take your advice as pay him double and have him work a third as much as the current guy?

Well besides (some round about stuff) I mentioned,
I think it will be BEST for the both of you if you'd "confront" him about how you're feeling.
"Confronting" somebody is much different from argueing or just firing him or other action that may cause hostility.
    IMO.
Just sit down with him and explain your veiw on his work ethics, break-times etc.
IF he becomes "hostile" or agitated, then you will see his true loyalty is at.
And then, listen or disagree and it will be bye-bye buddy-o...

Other than that try to find out: "Who is John Galt????"
(haha great movie, TERRIBLE ending...STILL waiting for part two)

    EDIT: funny comment from another
...you do realise that you are following reagans neo socialist economic program which got us in the mess we are in. ...
Personally I BELIEVE that Clinton started this mess by his pack giving out ALL those home loans they KNEW people couldn't afford, while taxing the property ,ALL THE WHILE knowing they'd be long gone by the time the [fecal matter hit the Osillator] from it all!!! THAT was the beginning of the mess, then came a (necessary) War when (an orcastrated event) of 9/11 and 3000 americans were crushed, burned alive, ejected from windows and smashed etc. ...necessary response which cost more $$$...

I have been really fortunate in that I have an incredible crew chief. He went a little flaky on me once when his sister od'd but other than that has been amazing.

When I was an employee I worked harder than when I got my contractors license, because I was happy to learn my trade and they lost money on me when they trained me. I always felt if I didnt bust butt, I was stealing from them. Then I hired people and found that the new generation stink think everything should be handed to them.

I know this is an old thread, and I'm sure the situation has been resoled by now..But why not pay guys on a piece rate? Get paid for every piece you cut. Se teh expectation reasonable for a reasonable amount of work.

For example if bob makes $13 per hour and is expected to cut 2 pieces per hour, then pay him $6.50 for every piece he cuts. if he shows up at 10 am, leaves at 4pm but cuts 16 pieces, who cares if he works 6 hours or 8?

Man this thread is back from the dead. Thortek it doesn't work like that and I don't have time to babysit. I haven't had a problem since the new year and we had our talk. He has consistently been at close to 40 hrs a week the only days he is short is when they cut everything up around 3 pm and they leave for the day. Trust me it takes forever for a crane to pick up all three burning fields and close to 80 tons of material at a time and segregate heavy melt from plate. Now the new guy I hired he can cut but we can tell he isn't going to last or make it through the summer months its been 80 degrees plus with heavy humidity and he is melting in it and constantly taking breaks. Its hot in hell's kitchen but he knew that when he was hired. You do realize every day is different when you cut scrap its not always beams and such its whatever comes out of the back of the trailer.

Flex time just doesn't work when it comes to production work. As a boss you have to be able to meet expectation and goals set by you and the other trades etc...and you can't do that if some days guys show up at 7 and others days at the crack of noon.

I have had really good luck with employees until I quit employeeing them.

I just level with them, Here is what I pay here is what you have to do to get paid and I dont want any trouble. I explain that if you cant make that minimum standard I will be unwilling to continue paying them...

NOw why did I quit keepng employees? Cause they are a Pain!!! I went to a sub contractor set up. The guys I use are their own boss and I pay them by the job. I dont have to maintain insurance on them or collect taxes. It works much better. but I dont need employees every day now.

food for thought: one yard close to me hires illegals, and the other yard hires americans what yard do you think i use? I like to see americans working, not more of our money getting sent away, as in the fishing industry i work in. they get them visas and import between 100 and 200 of them every year.
