Here I know you must have some type of state issued Identification to sell scrap metal so I would assume the answer to your question would be no

You really need to be calling the scrap yards in your area.

I did when I was 16 (because I had a valid state issued drivers license). I don't think there is anything around me that says you cant sell scrap when under 18.... BUT there is laws by me that you need to provide valid ID when selling scrap (sometimes they ask, sometimes they dont). So if you can get a valid ID (or already have one or a passport) you may be able to. Best bet is to call local yards and ask

Have mom or dad go with you. Around here i would say no. one yard has a sign that says all children and pets must stay inside the vehicle at all times

Here in Montana they took my school ID as a form of ID before I had my driver's license, but that wasn't something they were used to seeing. Most people that scrap around here are older than 18 so they all had a driver's license. Your best bet would be to call a few of the bigger local yards and explain what you're looking to do. They may have some helpful information to get you started.

In Arizona you can get a State ID card at any age, so id at a scrapyard no problem.

It is a debated ethical issue whether scrap yards should be buying from thieves. I haven't seen anyone worried about buy from young people.

You seem to be the only one debating the issue.

Theres a lot of things that yards post to do things "legally" that they don't follow at all. so even if the state says they need you to be 16 or 18 go to the yard any way and see what they do. Even if you call you may not get the answer you'll get when you show up with a wagon full of metal. If you know what I mean.

But to answer your question legally it will vary state to state.

Mom and dad going with you the first time regardless of the technical requirements will help develop a relationship with the yard. Your parents would be communicating to the yard that they support your efforts, you have their permission and that the yard can assume they are dealing with a legal entity. Letting the yard copy their ID to meet any legal loopholes would allow the yard to claim you are only transporting the items. The real advantage is the unique position you are creating with the yard, you would be a novelty and may get special perks.
