Question Want to start my own metal scrap business, looking for place!

    Hello,

I am based in Pakistan and own a business of clearing, forwarding, and shipping agency through sea route. I mostly deal in scrap items and auto parts. With the passage of time, I am thinking of to shift my business to the United States, and I also find a keen interest in the business of scrap metal.

    What I am looking for:

    1. Which city/state would be the fine idea for starting the business of scrap metal?
    2. How much does the startup cost; what capitals should I have in order to run the business smoothly?
    3. Is there any agent or counselor here, who can help me in finding a place and help me finalizing the documents?

    Thank you!

Welcome to the forum. Scrap happens in every city and tiny village in the U.S.

If you a need shipping access, I would look to at one of the port cities. You would probably want West Coast (California, Oregon or Washington) based on trade routes with Pakistan.

Read the previous threads and do some searching. I'm sure you will find a ton of useful information.

Thank you so much for a warm welcome!

This sounds good. I mean like I should look over the port cities, make feasibility, and go along with that.

How about if I want to start a standalone metal scrap business in the United States? Rather than making a shipment to Pakistan, I am planning of to run the business in the US. Would that also work?

Might be better to buy an already running yard, they are around.

Do you know someone, who is selling, so that I may be contact; or is there any way, where I can look over all of the yards, which are up for sale? This would make it easier for me.

Why not approach an existing yard and offer to buy the scrap from them, load it on your boat, and float it to Pakistan?

Currently, I am over making profit.
Do you think this would be more beneficial than running a business here in the US?

Honestly, I don't know. It would just seem that they are already set up and running. You made it sound like you were interested in the scrap, and if you had to, you would get a business to get the scrap. What is more important, the scrap or the business?

most areas of the country already have an established scrapyard nearby but you might be able to find one where the owner is getting older and might be looking to sell...how to find one i dont know...or try one of the auction sites like govdeals.com and bid on surplus scrap...you have to know your prices or you will lose money

    Noman:

I try to be polite but also honest. Ummm ....there are tensions between different ethnic and religious groups around the globe. Living in your part of the world i'm sure you would understand better than i ever could.

If one ethnic group had a lot of control over the scrap market here in the states and you were from another ethnic group that might be a problem.

Maybe business is just business and it really does not matter. ( I don't know either way. )

Wouldn't it make more sense to ship directly to China, Russia, or India ? They are quite a bit closer to Pakistan than the Unites States.

You have to give him credit for posting more than one time. He still strikes me as someone who knows nothing about scrapping, but perhaps he needs the scrap backinstan.

There's the language barrier T. You have to listen carefully to what the other person is saying.

I believe he's a businessman in Pakistan who is interested in doing business in the United States. I'm afraid we were not very much help.We don't seem to have the answers to the questions he was asking.

He might have better chances of finding the answers he seeks here:

I just read here, Top Stories that Sims scrapmetal (We have had Sims in NZ since early '90's, maybe longer.) Is closing 35 of its American scrap metal yards this year.

Its probably already closed a lot of those, and its mainly the North/Central America that's closing, not close to a Port/Harbour either, but, its a start.

The most famous catalytic converter company was owned by a middle eastern man named Saresh and his brother. They owned A-1. They made billions, not millions, BILLIONS.
