Door hangers

First I would like to point out where I'm coming from, I am in the process of moving from a 4 year "traditional" academic school to a VOC school (couple different possibilities), but am believing that this is the direction that I need to go to make a living for my self..... I'm looking at starting this January at the local VOC. I have a lot that I need to do around the house... alot of scrap to clean/ car parts that need to be listed/ helping keeping up 2 houses due to aging family, so since I all ready have holiday plans/ all this to do I figure it might be hard to have a "normal" job. I still have A LOT of printing credits at the 4 year school to use up, so I decided to make business cards/ door hangers to use the credits plus hopefully drum up some scrap. My scrap history has been mostly as a "stop the car, side of the road picker." I have done e-waste before, and thanks to the knowledge on this forum have learned a lot more (Thank y'all very much)... I have tried to search for some answers on door hangers/ways to go about it, but I still have some questions. But before those questions, this is what I have researched and found out/Plans: In our county it is legal to put door hangers up and not be a registered business (with no charge) as long as there is not a no solicitors sign present, in the city (there's a $50 a year fee) to do the same thing. So I'm looking at starting in the county and seeing where it goes from there. While I am hanging the flyers, I am planing to dress in my 2nd "Sunday Best", nice blue jeans (that are not ripped) & my "church" Carhart (it does not have oil stains all over it from going to the junkyard) and acting as any polite young 20 something should as I hang up the hangers. I have all ready set up a Gmail account for this scrapping adventure/ have a Google voice number for people to contact me at so that every ****, Jane, & Harry does not have my number. I'm figuring that what ever I get mainly is going straight to the scrap yard (minus ALL items that have PM in them) and stocking up on boards until I can run over to Ohio with a full load (Live hour east of Chicago). I want to focus mostly on electronics, but will take anything that I can scrap. The only problem that I have is that, I do not feel that I have a place that will readily accept a large scale drop off of CRT TVs/Moniters (worried about how many I would get via doing door hangers), but do believe that I should be able to get rid of a decent number though a couple of different sources, and not have it cost me a cent, thus why the limiting of 1 monitor per tower & not accepting CRT TVS. So now on to the questions:

1) How does this look to y'all? (would have a business card with the same information) But I'm printing it (in black & white so it cost me $.05 instead of $.15 for color) 3 to a page at school on "bright green" card-stock that I bought at the office store

2) How would you do pickups? (Thinking about not wanting to spend $3.00 in gas to go get $1.00 worth of material, since I live about 10 miles from Town)
My thoughts on this is either: Scheduling Multiple Pickups in the Same Area or on the way to each other... or Writing on the hanger that I will be in the area on a given date and to give me a call to schedule a pickup on that day... Thoughts?

(I might run into more questions as this progresses)
Any other thoughts or advice is appreciated, Thank you for your time reading this

I do like the door hanger idea much better than the normal mailer. These can be used in several different ways.

If you desire it to build a full time business I suggest you look for regular clients. I do pay for much of what I get but I would charge if I was doing clean outs. Because I pay for material I am able to pick up ,for me, large loads. I don't spend time driving around looking or picking up material. Best of luck. Mike

I have said this In a couple posts but you may of missed it so here it is again, it's a faster idea but yet efficient.

Take a ziploc bag and put a rock and a postcard size flyer in it, the rock will hold it down from wind. Throw it in driveways by newspaper and people will grab it.

Door hangers take time

If your printing yourself you will spend eternity cutting them, and also walking up to each and every door

Needs to be a slit by the door handle opening also so they slip on and off with ease

I dislike any and all door hangers or anything that makes you come to my door uninvited.

I like Devin's Idea. You don't bug me, an I don't throw you off my property for coming on unasked.

Err.. I bought 1000 - 4 Color Press run door hangers for hunting cars.
They seem to do pretty well.
No bullets fired at me yet!

I always knock to hopefully give them the hanger in person.. if no one answers I hang it and go.

After printing mailers, fliers, etc for over 25 years, door hangers rank up there with business cards, in return for investment. 1) You can target an area where you are already doing pickups. 2) They can be purchased pre-diecut so you can run them off on a printer as needed. 3) If loony tunes like Sircsrappypoopoo come out at ya, ya pull out the baggie with the rock and knockum out. 4) They are a legal and effective way to advertise. Throwing baggies with rocks in them and a piece of paper could be deemed littering. 5) They look, and are, a professional means of advertising. 6)I do have a few people, I would like to throw a processed pile of dog food in a baggie, from the tail end of my blackdawg, too.

That is just my 2 after half a lifetime of printing.

Ya can think what ya like bout my views but nothing wrong with not wanting uninvited people on my property.

Do what you like but if you put it on my door it'll go straight in the trash. I have no trespassing an no solicitor signs for a reason. I want company I invite them, or they call.

If that makes me a jerk so be it. It'll keep unwanted people off my property.

Sirscrapalot - I'd rather get junk mail then door hangers, religious material or menus on my door/porch.

Thanks for the thought…. And I have an printing store that is willing to cut the sheets in 3rds and put the hole in them for me at a reasonable rate. I know that I will be spending the time to walk up and down, but that does not bug me that much… I use to sell Boy Scout Popcorn so I’m kinda use to it

Thanks and I’m targeting what’s local right now and going from there…. And I do also believe that door hangers will (all though more time consuming) will give me the most professional appearance.

Yes be sure to do that Saturin. It's a nice sign of respect to heed the signs someone has posted up. Sadly many people don't hence folks like me who dislike it.

Down here on my sandbar, the flyers on windshields would get you a ticket, not to mention a lot of irritated folks. As they usually end up on the parking lot ground.

Anyhow, it's not my cup of tea, an a form of advertisement I dislike. Does it work? For sure. I just ask you, or anyone else thinking/doing door hangers be respectful of folks wishes. There are more people like me then folks want to admit. Difference is I share my views on it, an post up stickers/signs stating such. I don't think it's asking much for someone to heed a no trespassing/no solicitation sign.

Again..good luck with it. Let us know how it works an what kind of response you get from folks.

I don't recommend this (even though we print them) because of distribution issues. Who's going to hang them? Sometimes you pay someone to this and they end up in a dumpster.

When my daughter helped out her boyfriend who was starting a new service business they went around and hung the "door hangers/flyers" on the flag of the mailbox. DO NOT put inside the mailbox, it's against the law.

I sounds like you have a good plan. Will it work, to many variables to know, area, demographics, saturation of advertising and many more. The part where it looks like you are ahead of the game is everything you have in your plan is, well thought out and will be done in the appropriate, professional manner.

Referrals are the #1 way to market yourself. When I sold my last company 18 of 21 regular accounts were from referrals. Whatever contacts you generate from your advertising take care of them and encourage them to help promote you. When the old lady talks about all the junk her sister has, make sure you give her a card for her sister and then buy her a potted plant when you get a fat stack for cleaning up her sisters.

Judging by the plan you have for the door hangers I'm sure you know all this but I screw it up all the time. Im always passing up opportunities and only realizing it days later. Good luck

For my landscape, construction and property management company, I use door hangers to get new business. To communicate with owners or occupants. of existing customers. Things like: time we were there, fertilizer was applied to the lawn today, you need to water or not water, pickup your dog ????, (please) etc. They are very good way to get existing customers to communicate with us: These are my phone numbers, The cell phone number for the crew leader that manages your property is etc. A good way to increase sales with existing clients too! A way to let them know of other service, they may not be aware of, that you can provide: Did you know we do cleanups? design and build, manage rental properties etc. Yes door hangers work, as with anything it's how you do it that counts.

I'm sorry I find the baggie with business cards and small rocks, thrown on someone's property to be tacky and not something I want my name associated with. Just my opinion.

I don't have to worry about distribution issues

These boots are made for walking!!! I do like the idea of the tear off card, but I'm doing these on the cheap, so I bought just regular cardstock.

I delivered phone books when I needed a quick buck, so I know very well about this.

Yeah.... here's the issue with the plan..... I DON'T HAVE THEM YET (or business cards *still need to make these... doing it tonight* printing when I go back to South Bend tomorrow).... But today I saw this ford transit pull up to our local county collection center and what did he have inside tons of printers. I pulled up by him, politely said hello and started talking and eventually asked if he had more (guessing he was a business) and he's like yeah got a bit more at my one building (i would of taken all he had in the car, issue is that I'm still moving back home from college, but i figured why not network) so i took a bit of my time & helped him unload it to the county facility. Sadly I could not give him a business card ( since i don't have them

) but did give him my number and said that ANY scrap I can help him get rid of and pick up from his place instead of having him have to drive it somewhere... he gave me his card and told me to call him when I was ready, I'm hoping by next week to go pick up the load, and have a quick tear down & off to shred she goes (tossing in a bit of the stuff i got laying around here).....
