    junk signs on your truck

i was thinking of maybe getting some junk signs for my truck. the kind that has the magnet on them so you can just take them off when needed.
anyone have any on there trucks? i'm mainly looking for junk car signs. can anyone post theres by a chance so i can get an idea and examples on how to word mine?
also would i need an dot# or anything like that if i put one on my truck? i been posting ads on craigslist but not getting much response! so i figure maybe if i put something on the truck if that might help. don't like seeing my car trailer parked need to make some money. any idea's?

Check with your local laws concerning commercial vehicles. Over here if your vehicle has a company name on it you need to register it as a commercial vehicle and get special plates as well. Also be aware that some roads do not allow commercial traffic on them.

Besides the whole DOT thing, signage can be a target for someone to figure out a way to rip you off whether it's a wreck, theft or whatever clever way they come up with...definitely go with magnetic ones so you can take them off.

    junk signs on your truck

Your state law may vary, but the USDOT rule is you only need a number on your truck if it has a GVWR of 10,000 lbs or more. I actually called them and they told me I dont need one.

I'm going to add some vinyl lettering to the bed side (near the top) that says "got scrap - and my phone #" Short, sweet and to the point.
Look at other trucks with the mag. signs and see if you can even read it as it passes by.

Up here, advertising your business on your vehicle (especially scrapping where everyone knows its mostly CASH) just screams audit. Thats why I tend to stay away from vehicle advertisidng. If your a registered business, have atter.

I have the magnetic signs on my truck. I love them, and they weren't all that expensive. You just have to remember to take them off once in a while and give the door surface behind them a good cleaning. Tiny bits of crud will work their way in behind the signs, and if left go too long (like years), can start to damage your paint. Also, if you ever use the automatic car wash, make sure to take your magnetic signs off before going in- the auto wash will rip them right off, possibly destroying your signs and scratching up your truck

I prefer staying under the radar, so I wouldn't do signs, personally. If you are already operating as a business, though, it sounds like a smart idea.

Do what YOU want to do. Lot of advantages to having a business. One is financial - taxes.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

Besides taxes, it makes you legit in the eyes of the law, an client/customers. Vast numbers of reason to go the business route.

Small Business Administration has plenty of info, an links to other sources. The U.S. Small Business Administration | SBA.gov

Good luck, an get legit, it's nice to write off a lot of things via taxes. Oh an all that other stuff.

    This time a bunch.

Once the wife and I get into a house. I will evaluate if it is large enough for me to start my business on. This will be a catch-all for everything I do on the side (buy/sell, antiques, truck part outs, scrapping/niche scrapping, etc.)

You wouldn't believe how nice it is to be able to claim that many things, it does make for more work for keeping track of everything though.

Yes, one learns to keep track of such things as receipts, an all that other goodness that can be written off in the name of work.

I found it was well worth it. So was becoming a legit wholesaler. Easier to do these things then people think.

Again good luck to ya Op, Lousy, an anyone else going this route.

Nebraska......you don't need a commercial license (plate and driver's lisc) unless your GVWR is over 26,000. If you live in town you probably already have commercial plates. My business is a sideline to a farm so it's just another form to fill out and I keep track of fuel bills and deposit my receipts in the bank.

If you're a small time operator, it likely won't increase your business to put a sign on your truck any more than it would to just spread the word that you're a scrapper. You might hang flyers around bordering towns in the coffee shops. Better yet, go drink coffee with the "boys". I pick up alot of business that way.

Like jord said, a sign screams audit....it also screams DOT, HERE I AM !!

If a scrapper, look the part of a scrapper.....I have a beard..!!

if you want to make any real money with other business then you want to be one. I work from my house and deal with large business daily; they would not work with me if I was just some guy asking for stuff. If you want to know more advantages look at your states Attorney Generals website for the info.

I operate under a Sole Proprietorship As I have no liability. I buy everything outright and it is shipped to and from my house by freight. Though this has been a great year so far so I may need to rework it for tax reasons.
