    Supporting SMF E-waste buyers, when things are good or not so good!

    Another name for this thread could be; Dilemma-Discernment-Decision

    Dilemma A situation that requires a choice between options that are or seem equally unfavorable or mutually exclusive.

    Since market prices have dropped, there are a number of local options to sell all of my escrap, that are now "pretty competitive" with the buyers I have been working with on the forum. I have had to take a close look at the overall picture and NOT just on what they may offer today. A few local buyers, never seem to pay more, when the market is up. But, shipping costs mean a little less of a return, now.

    Discernment Is the activity of determining the value and quality of a certain subject or event, particularly the activity of going past the mere perception of something and making detailed judgments about that thing. As a virtue, a discerning individual is considered to possess wisdom, and be of good judgement; especially so with regard to subject matter often overlooked by others.

    If I take the obvious factors out of my thinking, ie... can make more or equal selling local TODAY, do not have to deal with shipping, get paid on spot, etc
    and then look at the overall other things at play. Who have I learned so much from? Has paid better when the market is up? Has been willing to be inconvenienced by my time and availability? (and quirks) Who will benefit, who may be hurt, by what I do, in the long term? Will I be hurting myself, by being "greedy" now and lose a dollar later, because I made a dime now? What is more important to me than just the "money" in what I do? There are a lot of other things going through my head, but I think you get the idea.

    Decision
    Is a judgment, conclusion, or resolution reached or given; verdict.

    Then the point comes when one has to "pull the plug" and move forward. I think it is wise, healthy, good business, to always be looking at every possible option. Exploring new opportunities, questioning ones past decisions, evaluating oneself, and making changes when necessary, is what will allow us to grow. Not just in the business sense, but as humans, to strive to be more mature in the way we deal with people and life in general.

    Over the past few weeks I have wrestled with all of this. Have met with some new buyers, will be changing how I do some of my local business with low grade, keyboards, (bulky material) metals, etc. Asked for quotes, studied company histories, reflected on my experiences working with new, and old, buyers. And, reflected on how much things have changed, for the better, as a direct result of becoming an active member on SMF.

    Then the time came, to make the "decision" as to what to do with the higher grade material. I need to keep things moving. Hoarding makes no sense to me. If I am going to sell to a buyer when they are paying well, and NOT when they can not, hoping to hold all my material until prices go back up, I am then like a clog in a pipe, that needs water to keep rushing through it! How is the buyer going to recover from a "big hit", if they paid well when things were up, and if we stop the flow when things are down?
    LOYALTY!!

    The buyers I have dealt with through the forum, DESERVE... my support, by continuing to sell to them...now. How can I justify selling to someone local, who never come close in pricing, to what I was getting six months, a year, a year and a half ago, from the buyers here? Knowing, that when the market goes up, the local guys won't, but the buyers here will? Take material away from a forum buyer now, to make that dime, and go back to that buyer later, hoping to make that buck? I CAN'T!

    In the past few weeks there have been a lot of "rants" about other humans. Some of the underlying comments were... "it just ain't what it use to be, when a word and a handshake, meant something!" Well, we can be part of the problem OR part of the solution. I sincerely hope, that those who have the chance to meet me in real life, know...I choose to be part of the solution. "LOYALTY" is not contingent on what the other humans do, but on the decisions we make, and how we live our lives. So, I will remain loyal to those that have treated me fair and have taught me so much. THANK YOU!!

    I hope that many of you will support, or continue to support, the buyers here on SMF, in good times and bad, as they have helped many of us get to where we are today. Some, in the short time I have been here, have become buyers themselves. Taking what the learned and applying it in their own market and still selling to the buyers they learned from. There is a true sense of "community" here, along with all the dysfunction that comes, with human interaction.

    Yet, I thank the Lord every day, that I stumbled in here, and for those that I have had the chance to work with, and for those I have yet to meet!

    I second that: "well said".

    In todays corporate society where humans take second place, you would be changing to the highest price at the drop of a hat. Who cares about a long relationship? The boardrooms sure as heck don't.

    But when you are dealing with another human, bending the business rules of "profit over all" can turn out to be good business. There's lots of tales of a small supplier helping a small struggling company and both winning in the end. Probably life-long friendships forged in the process as well.

    I still send mine to ewasted out of habit as well as I don't like selling to the local competition

    The goal of any business is to make a profit but many business nowadays set ETHICS aside for profit. I'm pretty much in the same situation as you. I drive 1.5hrs to my ewaste buyer and will continue to do so until I can no longer be competitive because of the prices I'm being paid or the opportunity cost in some other way become too huge. A few dollars isn't worth it. I prefer to do business with an individual-which is even more rewarding knowing I'm not supporting someone "higher up" to sit in a cozy a/c office while we work our butts off.

    I too have made the decision to continue to support the forum buyers.

    If not for this forum and buyers on here, I would know absolutely nothing about Ewaste would not be making ANY extra money at all.

    Your point about being a clog in a pipe is exactly why I made the decision in the first place. Hoarding solves nothing. If everyone hoarded Ewaste when prices go down, how long do you think the buyers would continue to be able to conduct business?

    I couldnt agree more. I came to this forum from a google search on how to break down a dishwasher or something silly like that. That was back when I did what I now know as CURBCO shopping. Look at me now. If it wasnt for this forum and all the great people who then shared what they know. I wouldnt be where I am today. I still like to go curbco shopping with the kid on monday nights. But the people on this forum who send me stuff keep me so busy I dont have to. I too started out selling to ewasted when he first came to the forum and boardsort and refiners. This forum has been awesome to me and continues to be an awesome place. Thanks to all who make it so.

    I agree totally. No yard within 60 miles of me has been able to answer questions about e-waste. No yard within 60 miles of me has been willing or able to answer questions like the buyers on this forum have. The ability to send a picture to a buyer, receive a price, send a fed x box the next day, AND know that the price you were given will be honored is a welcome relief. Some would say relief, others would call it trust.

    I can only afford to sell my shred to local yards. All other material is either to buyers I have found on this forum. Texas, Colorado, Arkansas, Ohio, Pennsylvania are all states that have received material.

    18 months ago, I had a pickup load of material that I made some money on. Only because of the depth of knowledge obtained from questions answered by buyers and other members of this forum have I been able to move to the point of not being afraid of accepting 10 tons of material at a time. Buyers that advertise on this forum and are wiling to answer questions are the ones that will continue to receive shipments.

    Besides the buyers, everyone that has posted on this forum also provides an extremely valuable service. Without the multitude of people that are willing to share, many of us would not have been able to make our "little scrap metal businesses" work.

    So, BroJer, thanks for the timely and on point message. It is one that we should all read more than once.

    BUMP...

    Wanted to revive this thread, and see where others are, at this point in time.

    Flew back into Cincy for a few days. Got two lots off to my buyer. The payout is not what it was when I started. Yet, I would not be getting back on a plane to Phoenix, in a few hours, if was not for SMF, and the buyers here.

    I plan on continuing to send, most of my material, to forum members. Obviously, the market dictates that some things be sold local. Not much any of us can do about that.

    What say you???

    I buy from folks who don't want to ship their product
    I ship out a minimum of 1 to 2 thousand pounds of boards at a time
    I only sell to environmentally responsible processors
    I sell my ferrous & non ferrous locally
    If I could sell circuit boards locally, I would, but that's not going to happen
    My choice is a fellow SMF member (not saying who it is, Mario!)

    Don't really feel that i can add much of anything to the thread. Everything that needed to be said has already been covered.

    I'm intensely loyal to the people i have long term business relationships with. I stick with them through thick or thin. That's just my value system .............

    Well said! I'd rather lose a couple of dollars on a shipment and do the right thing. I've found that through careful preparation, changing packing, and lowering my buying prices locally, the margins are about the same.

    Buy low. You'll have less to lose.

    i don't know your volume, but if you can hold out till you have over 500 lb, freight shipping could help with the price differences
    Currently looking for a job in or related to scrap/recycling. Relocation is possible for the right offer.

    That's what I'm aiming for. I need to talk with our resident freight guy about how to do it, but I've been filling boxes so that I can send them on a pallet.

    If I can increase profit that way, it helps everyone- sellers will receive higher prices from me, and I won't be taking a hit.

    Sounds like a win-win for me!
