Does coax cable have any value at all?

Wasn't too concerned when I got a little bit at a time, I just threw it away. Now I seem to be accumulating spools of it. Does it have any scrap value? Has anyone ever sold it on Craigslist?

Sorry if this has been answered before but I can't find it.

IIRC not all coax is created equal. Stuff they use for Dish Network set ups is better then regular cable so it might have some resale value...otherwise I think shred price might be best you get.

Are you saying this can be mixed in with our shred materials? Is there enough metal recovery for that?

Some yards buy it at a separate price. I just mix it with my shred. I got some and stripped it thinking the middle was copper, and put it in my copper wire pile. The guy at the scale was not happy.

If any water is encase with metal, like a lot of cable wire is now a days, it is only good for shred. If you cut a piece, and a magnet stick to it, scrap yard want it cut up into x amount of feet, so it doesn't get caught up in and mess up their machines.

For me it all depends on the type of coax. If the center conductor is solid Cu then I run it throught my wire striper. Some types of coax have Cu shield as well, tinned and untinned. Test with a strong magnet to determine if the center conductor is cooper plated steel of solid copper. I use a magnet from a hard drive to test the coax.

I have found that DirectTV has a solid Cu center conductor and Al shield. Much of the communication coax, ham radio, cb, commerical radio has Cu shield along with a solid Cu center conductor. Most all other coax I have checked, Dish, Time Warner is steel with Al foil for the shiel and this I mix in with the shred.

I like stripping coax because I can cut all the way through with one pass. And since its flexible I can do long sections at a time, up to about 60 feet at a time so far.

I find coax all the time, but I rarely pick it up. None of the three local scrap yards will buy it at all, unless you strip it down to its basic parts. IE: copper\mixed core wire and Metal\Tin Jacket. Also, I don't own a wire stripper yet that can handle the steel jacket yet.

My yard pays .02/lb for it but, I always throw it in with the shred for the better price. I usually throw it in an appliance to use up some empty space.

I toss mine in the shed pile but I don't get spools at a time if I did I'd try and sell it.

I was reading a post about coxaile cable stripping, I come across a good bit of it in what we do.. oh by the way I live in Hampstead, NC. I am curious where you sell yours and how? what I mean do they buy it as is or does it have to be stripped? What is shred that I have read so much about. Thank you in advance!
