    GUTS of a Server UPS

So here is what you can expect to find inside a server UPS.

CHeck out the size of this trasformer!!!

Got about half pound of 55% wire as well and 3# low grade board.

I found a transformer like that in a fruit machine once. All the copper was baked into a plastic, and stuck fast. Did you bother to strip it or sell it as it is? I tried smashing a hell out of it, but it wouldn't budge.

I took one apart takes ages and not worth it. Once you remove the tape and takje off the coiled copper, underneath there is more tape would round, take this off and remove the copper underneath and there is more wound tape.... Didn't get much copper from it compared to it's original weight and would have been similar if not worse price had I not just taken it in as is. The reason why it would smash is because it's not cast iron. It seems to be a plastic covered steel sheet wound round like a big roll of sellotape would be.

Sorry to grave dig, but I've been searching around for an answer to a question, and haven't found it, and thought I'd grave dig rather than a new thread

Did you have to discharge the batteries in this? I am getting 4 soon, don't want to get a bad zap from it

You should be able to just disconnect the batteries and be safe. Once the bats are out, there is no more power.

Disconnect the battery that is connected to the board first, and do not cut the wires. Pull them off the terminals.

I did cut the cords on one and discovered that the batteries had a charge. No shock to me but a big spark so take care. Mike

Always bull the wires off the terminals first, Like disconnecting a car battery. No need to discharge anything.

Those are one of the easiest transformers to strip. You take a grinder and grind around the side then the copper and plastic just peals off. Takes about 2 mins.

I just got one and the battery has expanded so bad the metal case won't come off.

Most UPS's I scrap have swollen batteries and the only way to remove them it to take the UPS apart.

After disconnecting the batteries, discharge any electrolytic capacitors (metal cans) FIRST.
This will help avoid a zap.

Just cross them with an insulated screw driver?

What spinroch said. There are some threads on here about discharging capacitors. I've never tried it the correct way but I accidently did it the wrong way once. It's not something I want to experience again.

Perfect, I've read up on it and quite sure I get it. Just need to bridge the positive and negative terminals. Time to go get those battery backups from my neighbour
