    Thanks man.

I've tried that route but, as you said I don't know the buyer. Or his reputation.

Also, most of those companies are looking to refurbish DAT and other tape cartridges.

When I brokered plastics we had a truck load (46,000 lbs) of VHS tapes.

Some were actually some cool anime stuff.

We also had a few pallets of FLOPPIES (chuckle it up).

Not sure who bought the stuff.

As I mistyped earlier, VHS tapes are PS (NOT PP as I had said), still worth something to the right buyer.

    Wondering who it may be.

    Again, thanks.

To everyone else who posted in this thread, I apologize that my grammar is correct and no need to fear my proper spelling and congenial attitude.

With a simple search I found these guys. http://www.webuyics.com/scrap-types-we-buy.htm

No one here has dealt with or had the quantities to sell this sort of item that I can recall.

Checking the attitude at the door would have caused one of the following two things to happen.
    A. you may have not gotten the fun responses that were tossed out, or
    B. You could have just laughed along with the rest of the crowd when they did pop out rather than step up even higher on your high horse.

When starting a thread looking for information, you can not expect to hold back the opinions that you disagree with. There may well be a goldmine buried in those old boxes of magnetic medium, but we sure have not discovered it yet here. I do recall a post some time ago about someone who had a buyer, but it involved tons and tons if I recall, and I darn sure don't remember the poster or the title of the thread. It is out there somewhere.

As far as your original post about comments of "throw it in the trash bin" or "toss it in the shred pile", I'll bet for every one of those posts that you can find (which are probably legit), I can find 100 other posts telling someone to "break it down further", or "sell it on E-bay for more than scrap". Yes people get told to do that with stuff, but basically it is coming from an experienced scrapper that is trying to save a noobie some frustration, time and/or money. Those comments are allowed on this forum when they apply, so please do not try and stifle truthful information.

You can pout and swear at us and quit the forum if you care to over this, or you can look back at this thread and have a chuckle if you like and maybe we can actually peg down some real info on finding a buyer for this type of material. If I were to end up with a storage unit full of it, I would do my best to find a buyer and not just give up. The same goes with a member of this forum. If they stumbled onto a storage unit full, and they were sincere and not snotty, I and most of them would spend some time helping them search for the answer.

Sorry for the long winded response. I have just started drinking and it could have been worse had I stumbled accross this in an hour from now.

One last thing..............floppy, floppy, floppy. (Now smile and join in the fun and maybe we can help out here. It may take a few days, but you never know.)

Thank you for your legitimate response.

I'm certainly not trying to make any enemies or get anyone riled up.

I was just trying to prevent useless responses that I and others have gotten.

Ruffling feathers was not my intention.

    Also, FLOPPIES!

    Ha!

    EDIT:

    I've been drinking all day.

    Literally.

Last time I did this I got into it with author Anne Rice on Facebook.

Granted, this was a few days ago.

    I just don't like ignorance.

I take it as well as I dish it out.

    I'm really a nice guy.

    I swear!

    Magnetic tape composition

Primo, page 6 of the following link gives a run down on what magnetic tape is made of:

    http://www.tape-online.net/docs/audi...o_carriers.pdf

As you can see, it's actually a fairly complex product. I imagine this would present a challenge wrt recycling. Plastics recyclers (not collectors like us, but those that actually process plastics into a finished product) might be a place to start. Either that or the companies that produce magnetic tape.

If your research turns up anything interesting, please post it.

    I certainly will.

I don't have the space to hold onto the stuff.

I get it in sporadically so I can hold on to a gaylord or so.

I'm trying to be as much of a "zero landfill" company as I can being a very small business.

Technically I'm an independent contractor. ONE guy with some part time help.

I just don't have room to warehouse everything.

You might find a buyer for the outer plastic shells and just dispose of the tape part of the product. just a thought, that would be half way there to zero.

I had met this company at a trade show, and they seem to be the go-to guys in the industry for magnetic tape. With this being said they do not pay for or either take VHS. I honestly don't know a place that purchases the VHS...though I am sure there is somewhere out there. With that being said they do purchase the other magnetic tape.

If you have server backup tapes (DAT, etc) then you should list them on ebay. I recently made a little over $400 selling new backup tapes that I got as part of a surplus auction. Used ones may or may not sell - not had any to try. However, there is still a market for most styles of backup tapes.

VHS tapes I donate to Goodwill. Your 3.5 and 5.25 floppy disk if new may sell to some of the "collectors" out there. If it's old games or things of that nature I'd put them on ebay a few times to see if they would sell. Else - it would be the trash for me.
