what do you do with 2 to 300

Im a litte fish in a big pond. I would consider myself a dedicated hobbyist as far as e-scrap goes. So here is my situation. Just landed my biggest score to date. 100+ towers and the kicker is that they asked me if I take this stuff. Like I always say I take it all and sort it later ( except CRT's). So now im sitting on 300 or so keyboards (usb) and 300 or so optical mice (usb). Did some checking on the SMF site and the only buyer that had them listed informed me that they are not buying them at this time. (thus ending my happy dance cause that would of paid for it all ). So now here is where Im wanting to know what you all would do.

    1. I can't just toss them on CL cause thats how I found them and just feel it might put a bad taste in their mouth. Not to mention these guys are talking about passing my name around to area businesses and using me monthly

    2. have any of you had much luck with ebay regarding keyboarts and mice. I have seen quite a few listings.

Just looking for direction cause im not 100% on which way I wanna go so........your .02 please. ( here we go)

It's a toughie. I hate to put it this way ... but a used keyboard & mouse is something like a used toilet seat. Gawd only knows what somebody was doing when they were looking at *ahem* adult entertainment on the web.

Maybe that's TMI but you catch my drift ?

When you think about where people's hands have been it's kinda gross.

I buy things at garage sales hoping I will be able to sell them for profit. I would say my record is about fifty fifty. Sometimes you just have to throw a loser in the trash and move on.

use facebook yard sale groups....price them at like $1-2 each...someone might need some. There are also some places you can donate them...get a tax write off. there is a non profit computer recycler here that refurnishes and sell them for really cheap...they will take the mice and keyboards and I write off $2-3 per set.
PROFIT is made when you BUY/ACQUIRE NOT when you sell

And some yards buy electronics at .02 to .05 a lb, might have to go that way, unless every one you sell you guarantee it works.

I've sold mice on eBay, but they were NIP. I don't think that the market for used ones is very strong. Ask the computer shops? If all else fails, Facebook will sell a few. You'll likely end up scrapping some of them due to the sheer volume.

I may be reading into this too much, but for your benefit, I hope you did not pay as much as your statement appears to indicate. When your pricing out what you are willing to pay, you should really only be taking into account desktops, laptops, monitors, servers and cords. You should also only consider these at scrap prices and that they are missing some items, unless of course you can confirm otherwise. Other items such as printers, keyboards and mice should not be priced more than a few cents a pound at most.

Throw them in the garbage or in the shred pile either way your not going to make any money off them besides the cord thats attached to them

Keep the cleanest to sell- make sure all the letters on the keys are not worn off.The rest cut the cords , remove the mylar inside the keyboard and save it all up. On the mice, if it has any "yuck" on it cut the cord , and pitch the body. I have taken the guts out of them but I don't think it's worth the time. just my 2 cents . BTW nice haul ! Should keep you busy for a spell.

Or do further research an it would show you, you can breakdown the keyboards for the mylar an wire. An the wire an motor in the mice if you so desire.

Or just donate them, or throw them away. Much easier then actually breaking things down an profiting.

An yes...I break my keyboards down for the mylar an wire, an I rip the wire out of the mice, as I get something for the whole mice with no wire. I no weird, but hey..someone wants to pay me, I'll take their money.

edit to add: If your worried about what folks did with their items before they came to you, it best might be to focus your efforts on something that doesn't make you squeamish. I mean your recycling others people goods, chances are your going to come across dirt, germs, dust, bugs, an all kinds of other fun yet gross things. Buy some gloves, a dust mask, or whatever an get it done.

Ain't trying to be rude but this isnt the kind of gig for "clean freaks" an "germophobes". An all the above I listed can come out of electronics of all kinds. Keyboards, towers, whatever.

Sometimes getting paid means getting dirty or putting up with conditions you normally wouldn't.

Now pardon me, according to a bunch of threads I need to go prep my doomsday shelter. The sky is falling an all that.

cut the cords off and throw it in your lower grade wire and sometimes the mouse has a metal ball in it , pop your keys of the keyboards and try to sell them crafters !

< shrugs > It's like most anything else .... there are job hazards you run into. No big deal.

The main reason I equated used keyboards & mouses (mice ?) to a used toilet seat was to indirectly explain why there might not be a big market for them. It might be a very nice toilet seat but most people will prefer to go out and buy new because they're really not all that expensive. Folks are going to the wireless keyboards and meeces now because they're more convenient. That's rendering the old stuff obsolete.

The sanitation thing ..... ? You see it at the doctor's office. They've that disposable plastic wrapper thing that fits over the keyboard ?

Pretty soon they'll come with a mouse condom to keep the germaphobes happy !

As a refurb guy wired mice and keyboards are the way to go........Wireless may be ok for the guy at home but every time I want to boot a computer having to re-configure a wireless device is just not going to happen........I buy 100's of keyboards and mice every year from surplus auctions and yes many do get scrapped..........The worst thing usually from gov't employees that I find is that they are full of food crumbs........I hope that while sitting at their desk in a gov't office they are not doing anything worse
