Arrow Sell Boards or depopulate and refine yourself?

So I am new at this and I am doing this for fun / profit. I have watched lots of videos on youtube and I am now torn between depopulating boards or selling them to a site like board sort. Can some of you more experienced recyclers give me some advice?

Your Best bet is either , or either start reading old threads here and watching vids posted by members and forget what you saw on" Byob tube". or option 2 keep learning on byob tube and clear all the animals and people for 1 mile (maybe more) before you start refining.

There is a very good reason refining tech and methods are not discussed here. and why you aren't getting any response.

P.s. There are other better buyers on the buyer seller thread then Board sort. (opinion)

I'm not going to suggest any buyer in particular ( conflict of interest ) but if you have mostly low grade boards your going to need to find someone local as shipping will not be cost effective . Check out the buyer and sellers page and see what's close to you

again, study the buyers thread and use what you learn to make your own choice/. it is not fair play to recommend a buyer. just be sure to choose one from the buyers we have here, and you cant go far wrong. If you choose a buyer not in our list it's a crap shoot. you may get $300 or you may get $3. it happens away from this forum all the time.

There is a well known scam co. (not a member of this board) out there with a name very similar to one of our best buyers. so be careful. I have been selling to him for over 4 years with out even a sign of a hic-up,

Sry to be so hard on you but I studied for nearly 2 years on a very Anal refining/ recovery board before I even tried to refine the simplest product after 4 years I wouldn't even consider trying to refine any of the more complex like whole boards.

Pop some pop corn grab a Coke and spend a couple of hours each night for a couple of weeks. You will be amazed at what you will learn. I was amazed at how really dumb I was. mcw

yea thats about a 5-6 hour drive. Sadly I don't see a lot on here for NC in general much less western NC. Theres a great need here for people to dispose of e scrap cause all the local yards won't take e scrap so it goes to the landfill

Thanks for the advice I am still intimidated by the whole idea of using chemicals at this point but if I could do a hot sand bath to remove capacitors and such off these low grade boards that don't pay much to start with I thought it might be more profitable. I have managed to collect about 12 PC's thus far

Yea, that company has gone by 5 different names depending on what you look to sell them. Even the BBB won't touch them with a good recommendation. Can you say Shaky

Heat gun or maybe a used hair dryer but I can usually get all the stuff of value off by manually pulling/cutting them off. I don't know of too many small components (cap's-resistors-diodes) that have any value worth taking off. Low grade boards (usually brown on one side) are not worth shipping. Double green boards have about 8 different categories, that's where we come in by educating you about the different classes of boards.
I just sold some greenies that paid low price of .25 a lb.

Seth - with 12 PCs you will spend vast multiples more on chemicals and equipment than you will on actual recovered metal. Don't waste your money or your time. It sounds like you are too early in the game to think about going there. You might want to move that direction "some day", but seriously, not today.

A buddy comes by nearly every day to watch me scrap and oooohs and aaaaaahs over any sign of a gold finger, and is sure he wants to start refining. He knows nothing about chemistry, but refining is simple. He saw it on youtube.

Check out the gold refining forum. If you don't understand what they are talking about, you're not ready.

So if I understand correctly you have boards from 12 PC's and the rest are from monitors and or TV's.

At this point you should not be concerned about chemicals, depopulating, or hot sand baths. You need to keep collecting boards and reading here on the SMF.

Look at the buyers and sellers thread here on the SMF.

Keep watching the videos but understand their knowledge is basic and limited and sometimes dangerous and ridiculous.

If you really want to learn about ewaste keep reading here and learn to identify the boards you have.

As far as Board sort prices are close to what buyers here are paying, I do not use them as I would rather support a member here that pays to help keep SMF going! Find a local yard for your low grade boards and when you get enough sent out a package to one of our buyers here!
