    Question Scrap Neodymium Magnets

Do these magnets out of the hard drives have any real scrap value other than just scrap steel? I see them on Ebay for sale. But no one is buying them. I thought I read somewhere on here that they sell for about $1 a lb.
I am also wondering about the platters. I see these on Ebay as well with no one buying them. I heave read that there are trace amounts of platinum (not enough to extract) on them and the rest is aluminum. Is there a different market for these? Or do I just put these with my aluminum?

Well there are buyers here for both item you mentioned. You can find them in the buyers section. You will need to get a bunch together to warrant shipping them. Like 40 pounds of the magnets and brackets that will fill a medium flat rate box. Not sure on the quantities needed for the platter buyer.

there's not much of a market for them simply 'cos there's nothing of value in them.
once the hobbyists have got theirs for whatever, art? there's no-one left to buy them.
but if you've taken down HD's that far then you would of got your money out of the board and casing anyway.

We can now buy the neodymium mangets, small or big, solid or broken, magnetic or demagnetized. From any application as long as its Neodymium magnets.

Can pay $1 to $4 per kg.

Just a couple of things to consider.

Shipping cost per kilo & the Canadian to US dollar exchange rate.

    Just a hypothetical example:

The magnets pay 1.00 Canadian dollar per kilo.

That would currently convert to .76 USD / kilo

Multiply that .76 USD x .453 and that works out to a payout of about .34 USD per pound.

As you can see ... it might be a problem to make the numbers work once you factor in shipping costs.
