APC Battery backup ??

Whats a good pricing to give a customer for APC battery back up units with bad batteries?

It depends on the model.

Rack mounted power supplies resell very well. I get 80-100.00 for them after I test them and they sell quickly.

Stand alone units do sell but slower and at a lower price 40-80 range.

99% of the time if you slap a new set of batteries in they work fine. Rather than buy new batteries usually I have a few extra sets of batteries from used UPSs that have some life left, throw them on a charger, and test the power supply. While these used batteries won't hold much of a load , they will hold enough juice to power the unit up for pictures and show it's working.

1500,2000,3000va ect do sell better than 1000va models, lower than 1000va is mostly scrap.

I don't scrap these much, I have been just reselling.

By testing it with used batteries?

Tested is tested. If it powers on, charges the batteries, and supports a load what more testing do you need? I'm not selling it with used batteries as "working". I'm selling it as "tested" and fully functional, without batteries. I've never had one come back.

Thanks for the explanation Phantom. THe way it was worded in your first post it did sound like you were selling them with used batteries as good units. Glad to hear your not.

I picked up 2 - APC 350's (for free) today. From what I've read above, it is mostly scrap, yes? I have seen several on Ebay with buy-it-now prices of $20-40, not sure if that is what they are actually going for though. As far as scrap prices, how much would I expect to get for it by breaking it down? Thanks!

I buy all apc and ups backups complete at 20 cents a lb newer ones I test but older ones I scrap

Heck if you get some for free that are good newer ones, I'm using it for my gaming rig, if the power cuts out I'll still be able to play games for a bit lol, and it also protects against a power surge.

Those have an expiration...typically 5 yrs from date of manufacture. They stop holding a charge. Also shipping those things tend to push it above the price for a new one if someone pays very much for it.

They can be sold.locally if they hold a charge or scrapped (lead acid batteries, wire, copper windings, and teansformers in them and).

Call your local yard and ask what they pay for batterys.
Offer half of that per pound and you cant really lose.
APC battery backups are easy to take apart.
Take batteries out, remove transformer, clip some wires, remove low grade boards, pull brass/copper grounding wire, rest is mostly plastic/trash.

the boards inside usually net me med grade price after I remove the heatsinks

My local yard will buy the whole unit at battery price if batteries are in them. No work and not a bad price.
