You run a scrap yard and have a 40ft container full of computers and ask what you have? A 40ft container of computers until you can figure a way to turn it into money........Want to ship them down to me for $4 each?

So what do you want to do with them? Sell whole as ScrapYaHerd asked or break them down? Take the time to read the old threads on breaking them down or look for a buyer here on the forum. Also welcome to the forum, Mike.

Okay, ONE MORE TIME. A computer is NOT a CPU. The CPU is a little chip inside of the entire computer. It is a CPU Central Processing unit.

I hope this helps as your first lesson, but please look through everything else here and you will learn tons.

But the most important is that a tower is NOT a CPU.

    /rant off.

Welcome aboard. Grab some great knowledge here.

Parrothead is right. The monitor is the "computer", and the tower is the "hard drive".

Welcome to the forum. Yes, they are worth more breaking them down, just like any other multi-metal object. We encourage active participation in the learning process.

What "reliable sources" are you looking for? If you want to know if it is worth breaking them down and shipping the boards, etc, to a buyer it depends on what your time is worth. I mostly break down computers and electric motors. I do it part time for a hobby that pays and is interesting and provides me with some needed exercise. I understand you have a scrap yard so you might best collect the material and sell whole units to others like me and others here on the forum. I am assuming you aquired the hord of computers paying shred price so selling them at $3-$5 per computer would be a money maker and not take up much labor on your part.

If you have employees with more time than work you may want to get into the breaking down of the computers. So without more information than you would most likely want to share its difficult to give any real advice. Of course there is the old standby, read the old threads on this forum. Start with the sticky threads, read the electronics forum also the buyers/sellers forum. You will notice the many reviews that our member/buyers receive from those who have sold to them. I hope I have been helpful, Mike.

Is that 40 cubic yards? If you can do the maths, you will probably find that 40 cubes of CPUs
would be a big BIG number of units.

The average CPU is 1.5" square x 1/4" thick or .56 cubic inches. Divide that into 40 CuYds and
see what you come up with.

    Cheers

    .56 cubic inch's = 0.000011360 cubic yards * 3,521,000 processors you get 39.99856 cubic yards

So well just say for fun that they were all Pentium pros

Im sure the buyer would give us a better price with such quantity, it would equal 105,630,000 @ $30 per cpu

Now if gold shot up to 10k an ounce that would be a 10 fold increase.

    So 105,630,000 * 10 = 1,056,300,000 just over a billion dollars.
