Need help, what is this? Where's my CPU?

breaking down one of my servers from today. All excited to pop that heat sink off to see the CPU. Needed to remove the entire Mother board and undo the heat sink from the bottom of the board. First time i had to do this. Heat sink was large, didnt release like all others. thought i had something extra special under there. finally got the heat sink off and it separated in like 3 pieces. Again, never seen that before. Well when i got it off, i didnt recognize what i saw as a normal CPU. i tried to pry it off and it kinda crumbled like ceramic. i see gold pins. i dont know if i can actually remove it. in the picture its the two tone shiney thing on top. Any idea what im looking at? Thanks.

Like all beryllium compounds, BeO is carcinogenic and may cause chronic beryllium disease. Once fired into solid form, it is safe to handle as long as it is not subjected to any machining that generates dust.[9] Beryllium oxide ceramic is not a hazardous waste under Federal law in the USA.

try not to heat it up and produce dust and i guess you can pry away.

i would assume above the normal cost of a server board? or would it just be the additional weight to the board? Sorry man, just anxious to get answers. I did send Olddude a PM like you suggested. But id imagine him being as old as he is, he's been sleeping since 8pm.

Yes way above normal board price. i would just leave it and let the the big guys deal with it.

One reason i didnt take the server apart that i just got. its the processors were coated in that stuff.

No problem, soon you learn more gems will come along but just like some treasure it has a curse on it. But to get that you would have to snort a few chips worth of dust i bet lol
