I sell my working printers to this printer repair/sales guy by my house. He only buys certain printers but at least I can sell some of them first. Its always nice to have a buyer lined up to save you time.
The broken printers, I just take out the cartridges, cut the cords off, and recycle the rest @ .05/lb ewaste. I found that with printers you loose a lot of weight in the plastic that you throw away and the bigger printers are a lot more time consumer than other e-waste. You can sometimes double your money by breaking down larger printers but, it just doesnt seem worth the time compared to the break down of other items such as TVs.

I would like to thank whoever started this thread.......It motivated me to work on printers all day long.....Found some good stuff in one had 8 small sticks of memory and even a hard drive........Oh well I did alot of things I had been procastinating with now someone needs to post a thread (What not to do CRT monitors)

I hate inkjets. Laser printers are fun. Alot of the screws from laserjet are stainless. So are some of the rods. The stepper motor in laserjets is easy to take apart if you have snap ring pliers. Then you can remove the copper from it. The engine boards have copper inductors you can pull off. This is a low grade board in the bottom of the printer.
dot matrix printers are easy to take apart and have a large transformer, nice motor inside. Boards usually have some gold worth pulling.

About the only thing in escrap not worth pulling apart is the motors in cd/dvd drives. Just yank the board, rest shred. Other is hard drives. Not worth the time. Throw them on Ebay and make a 1.25 lb and they pay shipping lol... Although save and test the large capacity drives and sell them as good working lots.
Everything else is gutted....

Never give away money!! At the very, very least throw them in the shred pile. I used to break them completely down, now I'll take a little extra time if their higher quality, otherwise I just smash them on the garage floor, rip off the plastic, pull as much wire as possible, hit the motors until they break off. Done.

Just bought a bunch yesterday, along with some hex screws..... those hard drives suck! But worth it.
Doesn't anyone try to sell the plastic? Ive been saving mine so I can.... it adds up SOOO fast!

I love printers. Love them. Typically you get a nice 8 oz board, along with 2-4 ink cartridges good for 4-8 bucks in store credit. Then I chuck the rest in the shred pile and move on. If you really want to have some fun, you pull the cartridges, and then smash the piss out of them with a hammer to get the good stuff.

I just wedge a flat head screw driver in the side of them and pry it. Takes half a second.

Yes, I do sell my mixed plastics. Sold it all yesterday for $0.08/lb. Got raped on the boards and drives that I sold, but at least they did buy the plastics.

Thanks, this is helpful. I just picked up about 40 printers last week. Wasn't sure what to do with them.
