I personal rob Ganders Mountain dumpster. I have full permission from way over two years ago and still go to this day. One day i got a stack of 50 Diversified boxes. I use them all for Mario shipments. Perfect to fit 60 lbs in it. Another time I found these small lightweight boxes. I felt a little weary about them, but I used them. No damage claims. I wanted more, but my gf was *****ing truck was overfull. I said nope, still got the roof and hood. I wish I didn't listen to her. I wanted more, because I sell a lot of smalls.

Another thing to check into is poly bags. I got these way big poly bags from ebay. I think I paid less than 20 shipped for 200 bags. They are super big, you can fit a folded shirt in them in no problem. Real handy if you have unbreakable items. Or even wrapped bubble wrap around the item nd the poly bag.

Last but not least I discovered is USPS priority flat rate bubble mailers. They are 5.70 unlimited weight anywhere in the us. It literally just shipped a carburetor in one. I wrapped it in 3 inches of bubble wrap and threw it in the bubble mailer. it was like 15 pounds. It looked like a giant softball when I got done. Made it ok no issue. Saved me 7 bucks on shipping.

I have even shipped routers and such in the bubble mailers with zero issue.

It has cut my shipping in half since last month with zero complaints.

Good info on the flat rate bubble mailers. I'll have to look into that, especially if the USPS doesn't mind softballs.

In the past I have put an ad on CL for free peanuts and packing materials. Worked like a charm while I was doing evilbay and I rarely paid for those items.

As per my postman Mr Bob. He is the old school stoner type..LOL. His exact words, it fit's it ships. I only had one lady who was a b**** at another post office. She started opening everything, complaining about everything. Little to say me and Mr Bob made sure she was on the bread line for customer harassment and other issues. It was no worries to flirt with her bf holding a line up for 15 mins, but couldn't scan my 10 items. Sorry side track. Look into regional a boxes as well. They are like 5.90 for shipping most places in the country as well.

Flat rate is really the way too go for stuff thats too heavy for first class or too light to be cost effective to ship UPS or FedEx

I have a few shipping methods, one, I buy alot for refurbing so that packing stuff gets recycled, especially the screen protector ends. Two I also use plastic grocery bags. I will fill them up with spray foam and wedge the end of a screen into the bag carefully so when it sets its rigid and protected. bubble wrap and peanuts come free from my own neighborhood, I've got two QVC freaks that live on either side of me. Also...the computer shops I still pickup from provide me with enough antistatic wrap, bags and closed cell foam that I never have to purchase it.

I do need to find a source for double wall cardboard boxes that are smaller.

I love free boxes. The only time I buy them is when I send in a lot of books to Amazon. I just prefer having a nice sturdy box for 40-50 lbs of books.

I pick up new materials whenever I drop off my own recycling.

The USPS free shipping supplies route is a good way to go as well. I highly recommend the REGIONAL RATE A box in addition to the padded mailers. There are two shapes which will each fit a variety of items. At my old job I used to ship pairs of scooter shocks in them. 12lbs for $7.55, or something along those lines.
I try not to 'waste' perfectly good, virgin supplies provided by the post office as this goes against what scruples I have

I used to use walmart plastic sacks till i used the whole cabinet full. So broke down and bought a package or packing paper from walmart works great. I get boxes from my work but need to hit up the thrift stores my buddy told me they have tons of boxes. But ever time I got down there they are really busy and Im sure they don't want to deal with me. Oh ya news paper and magazines work great also. Most people don't mind what you pack it with as long as there item is not broken when they get it. they rather have a ton of trash than a broken item they payed good money for.
