Non magnetic, throws sparks when hit with grinder is it stainless ? Also silver in color thru out. Searched and couldn't find the answer prolly missed it tho. Any help would be helpful.

just try it with a small sharp bit, if it's al you'll get a steady stream of shavings, if it's ss you'll have to push it to even make a dent (unless it's a special ss bit)

It doesn't. Most pump parts are cast stainless if it's a deep well pump.

SS sounds different when you ''tink'' it with a screwdriver too!
seriously though, you cant drill it or cut it with a pair of side nips like you can aluminum.

if it's been near water (or outside) it won't be tainted at all if it's SS. Even ali develops a powdery residue after a while.
Don't want to hijack the thread, but found out on my last trip that my yard does not differentiate between non-magnetic and magnetic stainless. If it "looks" like stainless they will take it. Now I find myself trying to walk that line of "how magnetic is too magnetic" for my stainless pile.
Erewen, you need a new yard you are getting ripped off there's only a 65 cent difference between 300 series non magnetic 5-9 percent nickel content versus 400 series with barely any nickel low Chrome and high iron content. If a magnet sticks to it you are better off throwing it in the HMS pile.
Mulden what happens with aluminum is called oxidation its the same as leaving a piece of steel out and having it rust. Do you have aluminum siding on your house rub you hand up against it that white powder you will get off of it on your hand is called oxidation.

Just a note on that 'Ali dosn't spark when hit with a grinder'.
If theres a thicker oxide layer on the Ali than usual & you touch it with a grinder, there probably will be sparks.
Not a lot of them, but sparks are sparks.
Once your disc has got thru the oxide layer, it won't spark nearly as much.
Anything thats been outside for a while will have a thicker oxide layer on it.

Steel sparks alot, ss sparks a little, alu. dosn't spark (or maybe my eyes are going bad)

While not feasible for all scrappers to buy one it does help to have one as you can open new markets and get better price for sightly more knowing the exact alloy content on items.

If it is used in a well pump it is probably stainless or cast. also for future reffrence stainless gives iff a different color spark then crome or steel.
