Looking for advice... scrapping a Mini Kota electric trolling motor. Should I strip the copper wires? or just cut?

Welcome to forum. I read your intro and read the responses given to you by two very knowlegdeable people. If you took their advice then you are the fastest reader in the world and have no need to be a scrapper. If you didn't then I wouldn't plan on getting to much help if you aren't willing to help yourself. I will give you an answer to your question this time though...if the motor works then sell it, there is more value in selling it than scrapping it for a few bucks. Good luck.

No it doesn't work. I disassembled it and just sorted it out. Figured like most anything else this will a learning process. I'm very aware that I will have to figure things out for myself. I have been reading and I'm in the process of gaining knowledge. Thank you

Motor should have cu windings but scrape the surface to see if it is cu coated al. If it is al then its not worth breaking down the motor to get the winding, can be sold as cbm(copper bearing material).

To strip or not to strip, that is a very well chewed question. The answer remains the same its up to you. Try it, then you will know the answer for that particular wire for you. Warning stripping stranded wire in a carpeted house can hurt for a long time into the future, don't do it. 73, Mike.(wow lots of free and easy info, I must be getting old)

Yes that wire is big enough to be worth stripping!

Strip those wires. They are a good size wire. usually they shortout and the wire might be burnt or black on the inside. If you can, cut open the motor caseing with a angle grinder for the motor. Its alot of work cutting them open.

That's Minn Kota lol not Mini... so I finished pulling apart that trolling motor tonight. I searched the forum "trolling motor" and found my own thread. ha Lots of good thick copper wiring in there. I was surprised how easy it was to get apart. I was expecting it to be much more difficult. No grinder/saw necessary. Just banged it apart with a hammer. Took me only about 10 min. to strip all the wiring. Most of the wiring was copper but 2 wires i stripped were silver in color. After I researched here I took a file to it and it is copper as well. Is it the tinned? Now help me with the magnets in the motor that break apart. Really big one in there. What do I do with this it's all broken. Save?

That extra stuff goes on the shred pile, general term for mostly steel which can contain a fair amount of other material. Its where you would have put the trolling motor had you not broken it down. Go to the salvage yard once and you will understand.

I am impressed you were able to figure out that the silver colored wire was tinned copper. Tinning makes soldering easier. You did well so go hammer something else into summission, er I mean beat the copper out of it. Mike.
