Hello....yes I did search but didn't get any good answers.
I.got a small window unit ac. Is it worth it to breakdown? What's the most worthwhile componants to break apart? I do see the copper tubing for the radiator looking thing. I believe that's the coil? I'm a little behind on my hvac terminology. Thanks
Its been mentioned before in other threads. If you can't scrap a ac unit without releasing the freon into the air then
leave them alone.

Take it to someone to recover the freon then break out the sawzall. Well worth you time if you can get someone to recover the freon for cheap. I have a buddy that does it for free for me. AC's are one of my favorite things to break down next to computers. I figure on the average a window ac unit is worth about 15-25 bucks could be wrong though.

mrdew- I havent been on here long but I have been reading ALOT. What I dont want to happen is those of you that have the knowledge and experience in this field to completely shut down because of the unwillingness for people to put some time and effort into this business. There is an old saying that I pass onto the rookies that just start out in my f/t job. Keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut and learn from those who have been there and done that before. I would like to see more of that here...just sayin.

I have never dismanteled a window AC. I've been told not to mess with them because of the freon inside (brother-in-law). But there is copper in them. One of these days I'll get the courage to tear one apart.

Finding all that free info is great, isn't it? But until you find it just leave the a/c's alone. Otherwise you'll shoot your eye out.

there is usually two copper core radiators, one compressor, one electric motor, one cord, a little copper tubing, and some steel. As long as you can find someone to get rid of that freon for ya ac's are a good money maker. Go to your local hvac guy and ask him how much he would charge to recover the freon for you. Maybe you can work a deal with him. ie one radiator for evac.

We did around 460 ac units+refrigerators last year and break them down. We remove our own Freon. I do know in the opinion of the EPA if you are dismantling it for the purpous business IE selling the parts for scrap then if you dont properly recover the freon you can be subject to 10,000 fine and or jail. Something to think about when you look at that 15-20.00 of material. It only takes one nosey neighbor to make a phone call.

BTW because it is our business I charge 20.00 to pull the freon or i will give em 10.00 to leave it. I dont know any HVAC guys who will do it for free. I know that dosent mean they are not out there, might be better off finding someone like us who will buy them with the freon inside.
