    Cars

    Sorry but its Sunday and google is fail for me on this question as there are many different answers but I was hoping to get a base line description that I can work with for now on determining the cost/profit to scrapping cars.



    When turning in a car at a yard...How do they weigh it or take it as? Steel? Tin?

    I plan on buying way junk cars, taking the copper, batteries, alt, starter etc etc out and scrapping the rolling shells. But is it like tin? or what do any of you guys normally get for cars? I searched here but I must be using the keyword search wrong.

    very competitive business these days, and to make any good money you need to know what you are doing. cant find junk cars any where arround here for less then $500.

    The scrappers around me tell me that cars are bringing $260 a ton at Omni-Source. That's the same price we got for our last load of computer carcasses and misc. junk.

    local car dissmanteler just offered me $375 for my 90 dodge pu last week. it lookls like a junker but it is a scrapper.

    When buying cars, you REALLY need to know what you're doing. This is a guide I got a few years ago and describes the different categories:


    CARS - Gas tanks must be removed. ALL FLUIDS MUST BE DRAINED. Cars with tires will get paid less.

    COMPLETE CARS - Any car that can be driven to the yard must have converter, radiator, battery and all working parts attached.

    INCOMPLETE CARS - Cars with gas tanks or fluids not drained or missing working parts.

    Pricing is by the pound, by the type (Complete or Incomplete) and usually two or two a half cents a pound difference. That could add up quick for a car that weighs 3000 pounds. But it might be worth it for the right catalytic converter. Then you'd want to pull the battery, radiator and other "core" stuff.

    How I handle cars, I have 4 guys in my area, different parts, that I deal with. Since I do not have a trailer or truck that can handle a car I will call one of these guys and they will pay me $150 - $250 depending on the vehicle. They will go pick it up and do with it what they want. I don't pay much more than $50 for a car so its a good $100 profit and I don't have to touch anything. I know I could be getting more if I took it in myself but I don't get enough of vehicles to scrap to make it worth my time.

    I agree dealing in scrap cars is very competitive, but $500.00 for a carcass - Wow.

    I'm paying $50.00 for complete cars and trucks, I can leave the fuel tank and tires on.

    All I remove is the catalytic, radiator copper or aluminum plus any aluminum rims and a bit of wiring and all the relays from the fuse box for the precious metals contacts.

    Since the price of cars, tin and heavy melt is all the same I stuff the cars to get some extra weight into them.

    I have no competition, and all the cars I can handle, people dropping into my yard daily selling me their old junkers. I'm actually thinking about making a call to the guy I sold my crane truck to, then ask if he would consider selling it back to me. I could stack three cars onto it.

    Anyhow we got feed up with the BS, wife found this neat acreage last November, we took possession in December, did a bit of selling on ebay to pass the winter then as you all know the car trailer was a recent build. Been busy hauling cars ever since.

    I really want to park the trailer and get some of my own projects completed before the snow arrives. I'm going to give the cars another two weeks. The shut her down until spring.

    CMHN where in the world do you find junk cars for $50? I just recently started buying and selling a lot of junk cars and to be competitive you have to treat it much like an auction such as ebay and bid as high as you can and still make a decent profit. Personally i try to see me putting atleast 70 to 80 bucks profit in my pocket after gas. Today i almost bought an 87 dodge dakota 4x4 from a guy for $450 he had it listed on craigslist for $600 neg so i thought since im a lucky guy i might get lucky and get him to sell it to me for $300 but he refused, then i offered him 400 bucks and he said he had to have $450 so this made me very confused because i wasn't too sure about the weight of the truck but i figured it weighed atleast 3000 lbs but the reason why it was such a hard decision for me was because it had some very good tires which i knew that i could sell right away for atleast 100 bucks, it had a cb radio that i knew i could sell for atleast 40 bucks and a nice am fm cd player that i could sell also. I really wanted to buy it because my gut feeling told me that even if i paid $450 for it that i still would make money but since i wasn't sure i had to pass. I use craigslist to find great deals and really dont have a problem making money just by being the first person to respond to listings. If i could get my girlfriend to stop aggrevating me i could make so much more.

    Yep, the short bed came in around 3050lb and the ext. cab at 3520lb. :confused:
    I googled it and the weights came up on consumerguide .com

    Me & a mate scrapped a 4wd van, it had to be removed in pieces as it was boxed into the property.

    We seperated it into its shell parts (sheet, thin metal) heavy parts (gears, cast iron, diff & swingarm suspension etc) aluminum cast bits & pulled the wiring loom & stripped & burnt that for copper.

    All the excess rubbish we dumped into our wheelie bins (local council rubbish service) for free disposal.

    I don't know what we actually got in the end, it was mixed in with other stuff & in different sales & overheads (grinder discs, sawzalls blades that didn't work, petrol & trailer)
    I do know that it was definatly worthwhile to do, NZ$500+ cash in hand after expenses (US$400+) & its wasn't all there, no radiator or battery or cylinder head or wheels.

    If I had the chance I would be doing just that, stripping vehicles down to the basics & playing the scrapmetal market $$ game.

    This particular truck was a long bed regular cab so it was definately a bit tricky as far as buying it was concerned. Whenever im not sure i just play it safe.

    You need to find out the rules of your yard as they are all different.Unless you have a rack or lift i wouldn't worry about messing with the starters.

    How much do y'all think a 95 regualar cab shortbed s10 would bring scrap? They want 300 for it but I can get 125 for just the transmission out of it

    Well if you can get 125 for the trany i would thinkyou could get at least 50 for the cat. You should be able to make a few bucks on it at 300 I would think.

    Parttimescrapper is right you will still make money especially if you plan on sellin g the transmission, i get .12 lb so after selling the cat and the battery minus 20 in gas i know i would make atleast 130 bucks even without selling the tranny i dont like messing with the tranny and engines, i just go for the easy stuff and if i cant profit that way the to heck with it.

    Ok thanks everybody. I think I'm gonna try it. I got the tranny sold for 125 and the bed sold for 125 plus the old bed in exchange. I might have the motor sold also. I'm just looking to make a few bucks Sinc I don't have a job right now
