Breaking Down Tv's.
I was just wondering who breaks down t.v's and in what case would u break down a tv here are some pro's and cons about breaking down tv's...
Pro's
-Some Copper
-Some Wire
-Low Grade Boards
-Mother Board
-Steel
-More Money Than Before You Broke It Down
Con's
-Alot Of Trash
-Could Be Shocked
-Time Is Money
-Takes Up Space
-Wear And Tear On Tools
It would be nice to get your in-put on if you break down tv's or not

i break down crts, theres alot of copper in them. Nevermind everthing else in copper goods alone your looking at 3-6 pounds depending on the size of the tube. I can do 3 of them in an hour so thats atleast $40 per hour on the low end. Its worth my time. They dont take up any space if you break them down as they come in, and my recycling company takes all the plastic for free. The tubes and the stripped low grade boards hit the trash.

NO MOTHER BOARDS IN TV"S!! I have never gotten 3 lbs. of copper out of a tv, maybe a pound or a pound and a half. There's now way you can get 40.00 out of 3 tv's, if there was I would be braking down tv's all day every day, and your throwing away the circuit boards??

Throwing away circuit boards, I agree do not throw away those sell them at your scrap yard, If your gonna break one down, I would do it smart

Seriously? Three to six pounds of copper per TV? Maybe some of the older ones might have just under 3 pounds, but that's about it.

yea i was probably a little off, the big ones have around 5 if you pull everything, and im counting transformers as full weight not copper weight. I said copper goods, not pure copper.

Okay, you got me there. I misread your post. That ain't nothing, though, at least to me. You are talking about what my yard would pay as motors, a miserable 25 cents per pound. #2 copper pays 2.45, so that's a huge difference to me.Originally Posted by jghilino

Circuit boards and electronics are not classified as hazardous to my landfill first of all. Between the yoke, transformers, degausing cable and wiring i average well over 3 pounds per crt. Are you pulling the transformers and visible copper items off the boards? On tvs the power cord and wiring alone is gonna be a couple pounds. You might also be missing the degaussing cable, they are usually about 1/2 pound.

Are you kidding me? The wiring is no where NEAR a couple of pounds, it's more like 1/2 a pound WITH insulation. What kind of T.V's are you breaking down, I want some!

I break them down. I can completely strip one in about 10-15 minutes, so it's worth it to me. Not to much work if you do it correctly. A drill helps a lot.

Maybe I need to check my scale then. Seemed pretty accurate, or so I thought. Or maybe both my scale and the yard I go to are both off...

I did three tv's today. NO WAY there is $40 worth of materials after they are broken down. Please if we all are doing something wrong or missing something let us know. An average size CRT tv will yield between $3-$5 in materials. There have been many threads on the topic and even a few who delved into buying them. If they were worth more than that there would be buyers on here for them.

read my message before commenting i said i can do 3 in an hour and clear $40 so its worth my time, not 40 for 1, that $40 would be everything like the steel also but even at $30 per hour its still worth it to me. So i am going to keep processing them. I think $10 each is a reasonable figure for the scrap value.

I did read it and I know what I read....not here to argue. To the op, like Russell said break them down weigh what you get out of them and see if it's worth it. Like I said above they are worth it to me as long as they are free.

I have enough trouble posting pictures and now you want a video...lol...read the linqs that Gravitar posted. I learned by reading and following the second one. His is even better with a few more added linqs to follow.

Copper goods is copper bearing materials...still only .20-.25#.
