    Business card pays off

Got a call today from a guy that I gave my card to one night when I was curb shopping. He called today and said he had an oven and some other things I could have. Said they were on curb and to come by when I can. My brother had the pick up so I hopped in the family odyssey and went over. Picked up a oven, dishwasher and file cabinet. While I was there he had a dumpster in front of his house almost full with a monitor and tower sitting on top. Asked if I could take them and he says take what you want. Grabbed 2 monitors, 4 towers, tv,small safe,VCR and a tuner. I know more is in there so I asked when he is having dumpster picked up, he says Monday morning but if I want to go thru it he will wait until after work on Monday to have it picked up. Monday is garbage day so I will be neck deep in that bad boy come Monday a.m. Before the other scrappers even get out of bed.

I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them.” John Wayne-- The Shootist

Nice! My business cards have only landed me 2 jobs so far..... one job I thought would suck until I finally decided to take part the HUGE four panel windows just 3 three day ago(Had them for a month now)...... ended up with at least 75 lbs of aluminum...... That stuff was way heavier than I thought it was.

It only occured to me yesterday that the main reason why people are getting bigger loads from people giving away scrapmetal, than they were originally quoted in the first phone call.

Is that the people giving away the scrap are 'quoting low' because they don't want you to think that what they have is possibly worth stealing, or etc. They don't want to be a target for scrapmetal thieves.

    ie,
They are saying "Its only a old oven & a broken fridge". Then when you turn up, they see you are honest & not going to harm, steal or cheat them, so they then pull out whatever else scrapmetal that they have.
And then, they are so relieved that yah honest, that they go looking for any other metal they could possibly even consider as scrapmetal.

Its possibly a huge weight off their shoulders (sic) and the relief that all has gone right in the end.

Makes chasing up those little deals worth it, I guess.

So far the little deals have been where I am making $$$ because I have been getting call backs to same locations. So what you said is a valid point. Also remember they are dealing with strangers and anyone would be a bit apprehensive. I know that when I answer a cl add and go do a pickup I leave the wife the address where I am going just in case you run into a nut job. In this case though a lot of things were in dumpster already and guy said " oh you take that too?" Yes sir I take it ALL!!! Lol
