    Stealing shopping carts -- really!?

More Metal Items Are Stolen in Little Egg

Real estate signs and shopping carts must be included in the recent rash of metal thefts in Little Egg Harbor that included street grates covering stormwater drains and street signs.
Last week, during its Jan. 12 municipal meeting, the township committee voiced concern over safety issues related to the street sign and grate thefts.
On Monday, real estate saleswoman Margaret Ryan added to the list. She said at least 13 metal signs were stolen from properties listed with Coldwell Banker Red Top Realty in Little Egg. “I called around and asked other agencies and they too have seen them disappear. In total it’s about 24 signs from four different Realtors,” she said.
The signs cost the broker between $60 and $70 and each salesperson pays $20 to list his or her name on a separate part of the sign. The person who has listed the house with the agency also pays $15 for having the sign erected on their property. “That’s a lot of money and although I called the police, I don’t think they took it seriously,” Ryan said.
She also noted that she had gone to the local Family Dollar store and there was only one shopping cart. “I asked the manager and she told me they had 20 but 19 had been taken.” The carts were made of metal.

I find this a bit funny. Reason being, my yard has a BIG board on their trailer with the items that they DO NOT TAKE...shopping carts being one of them.

Well, needless to say, I am always seeing shopping carts there. Reason for that, is there is 1 if not more guys that I know of who has CORPORATE contracts with stores like walmart, home depot, lowes, etc and takes ALL their metal.

My only guess is, he showed it to them, and they allow him to take it.

I am surprised though that this article wasn't about people stealing AC units.

Also, with the carts, around here, they are mostly plastic now. Only the very bottom (wheels) and arm pieces are metal.

Back in December I was dumping scrap iron and a guy with a load of shopping carts and those big orange roller carts they have at home depot backed in to the right of me. They told him to stop unloading them and said they dont accept them here. as I was leaving another truck drove passed me with shopping carts. I worked at a grocery store for a long time. Shopping carts have "property of Store name" ingraved on the bottom back by the wheels. sometimes....

I know when I was a kid I use to find shopping carts down by the river from local grocery stores. As a kid we would take them back to the store and the manager would give us a finders fee for them. I'm sure giving us a couple bucks for bringing a cart back to them was cheaper than buying a new one. I wonder if they still do that.

When I was younger me and a couple friends used to ride around at night in my old beat up Bronco 2...(you know, like cool kids do), and one of our favorite things was go to stores and see how fast we could push the carts through the lot with my truck. Then I picked up an S10 Blazer for $200, and while it didn't push carts well, I could hook them onto the trailer hitch and they would support themselves on the spare tire mounted to the back of the truck. Usually we did this to prank friends, you know, haul a shopping cart to their house and dump it in their front yard. Once, for poops and laughs, we pulled one onto a country road, and I managed to get the truck to 65 mph for 5 minutes before it finally hit a bump and jumped off...

I'm not proud of my youth.

Depending on the condition of those carts, might just have to assume that they were not properly given to them.

I bet the guys in the trucks were pissed! lol

That's gotta be either Tuckerton or Mystic Islands. Needless to say the earlier story on the idiot that fell down the shaft with his brothers, that's where they were from.

Working at a job site one day and this bum rolls up with his cart and finds a shady spot to park it. He starts emptying the cart out and so some of us start to watch wondering what's up. Gets it empty then starts making a small fire then flips over the cart on the fire, pulls out a steak and starts living the high life.
